About the Author
frank h. hoff is a graduate marine biologist who has been active in the culture or fish and livefeed products since 1966. he is considered one of the original pioneers in the development of spawning and rearing techniques of tropical marine food fish including pompano, seabass and ornamental clownfish. for eight years he served as director of the aquaculture division of the florida marine research laboratory. in 1974 he founded instant ocean hatcheries, the first marine tropical fish farm located 30 miles inshore which used artificial seawater. in 1984 he founded florida aqua farms and aquaculture supply. currently he is the chief consultant to ora (ocean reefs and aquariums) which is the largest marine torpical fish farm in the world. he has over 17 professional publications, numerious popular articles and author of two books; plankton culture manual and conditioning and rearing of fish with emphasis on marine clownfish.

Thorough, well-documented and interesting

For information on maintaining and rearing clownfish, this book is unbeatable. Every aspect of culturing and rearing marine fish, from hobbyist's tanks to large commercial operations, is described in detail. His opinions are supported by actual data, either from the records of his years in aquaculture or from the scientific literature. Thus, when he writes about the importance of a given parameter, it is more than just a casual observation or repetition of lore. The focus of the book is the production of healthy baby fish, which requires healthy adults, eggs, and larvae. In a systmatic way, Hoff describes the effects of filtration, light, water conditions and food on all life stages, providing an integrated view of the process. Although this is not the "only book you will ever need", it is a valuable addition to the collection of the experienced aquarist, and would help to eliminate much mystery for the beginner. The prose is not helped by the grammatical and typographical errors, but is generally straightforward and clear.

What a wonderful book about clownfish

When I bought my first mated pair of clownfish (maroons) last month, the folks at the store said, "There is only one book you need to understand them completely...." this one, and they were sure right. This book is simultaneously comprehensive and specific, and it is delightfully readable -- filled with very instructive information about breeding of all clownfish.

Good book but very technical

If you're trying to breed clownfish at home and like the technical scientific background on commercial breeding, this is your book. It's not written for easy reading, and it's a bit too detailed in places and lacking in others. It makes a great place to look up data when you're having problems but tough to just sit down and read.
