.C. Simmons, Mississippi's legendary author, returns with the tenth in the Jay Leicester series. Familiar and beloved characters, Rose English, Shack Runnels, Hebrone Opshinsky, and B.W., the Siamese cat, join in a medical thriller set in the Deep South and Colorado Rockies. From Gulf of Mexico waters to mountain ski resorts, Leicester deals with the disappearance of close friend and retired Radiologist, J.D. Ballard, who has fought long and hard for FDA approval of a noninvasive cure for cancer he thinks is being suppressed by the medical aristocracy simply for power, money, and prestige. The Candela of Cancri is J.C. Simmons at his best with his trademark tight plotting, pitch-perfect dialogue, and Hemingway-like sparseness. Readers will believe or not believe, love or hate the ending of this medical Mystery/Thriller. Cover design by Raul Villarreal Villarrealstudio@aol.com

The End - it's over!
By BrendaJane
I have enjoyed this whole series but will admit that this one is my least favourite, it was the most cerebral and/or philosophical...it had all the elements of mystery, action and mayhem but it got a bit bogged down with the added factual case studies (I'll admit they were interesting to start with but I stopped reading them because I got the message and it didn't change - I almost missed the last one that actually pertained to the story and I'm glad I read it after all.) I guess if the series went out with a bang I would have felt cheated that it was over so maybe it was better to keep a low profile and just ease out by winding down and tying up some loose ends, however, I didn't feel that it was a fitting ending for such an interesting series. Having said that I felt that there were enough plot twists and danger to satisfy everyone. Just because it wasn't my favourite in no way means I didn't like it.

A surprisingly entertaining series...
By Joy
I have now read the entire Jay Leicester series, and have to admit to enjoying them immensely; this review is primarily of the entire series, rather than of any one book. I downloaded the first several books for free, not expecting much from them, and read the first one with no expectation of even finishing it. I was pleasantly surprised, enough so that I actually purchased the rest of the series and read all ten books in quick succession. I chose a four-star rating rather than five because (1) I couldn't give the series 4.5 stars and (2) nothing (well, almost nothing!) is perfect.

The mysteries are subtle rather than overt, the violence is downplayed (for the most part), and the characters are engaging. As one who wishes I could fly a small plane more than I do, I appreciate the descriptions of flight - from the checklists and procedures to the airfields to the aircraft themselves - and especially the sensations and emotions flight engenders; it is true there are no words to adequately describe them, even for a skilled writer, but JC Simmons' almost lyrical prose in these passages comes close. Yes, there are some editing issues (improper word usage, inaccurate spellings, repeated words/phrases...) but even as a former editor, I was able to ignore most of them; I found the stories that entertaining - and I learned a lot, about both the aviation and the wine industries.

The conspiracy at the heart of this final book is admittedly so farfetched as to push the limits of credibility. But then, to borrow from the Bard, "...there are more things in heaven and earth...than are dreamt of..." Beyond that, even this final adventure offers the same delights as its predecessors - some familiar friends (and a few new ones), fine wines, lush descriptions, and of course, the glories of flight. I admit to shedding a few tears for the passing of characters I ultimately came to think of as old friends.

I only wish JC Simmons would write more of these adventures - perhaps a book or two about Jay Leicester's days flying for the airlines, or about Rose English, or about Hebrone Opshinsky and his wolf Savage... But then, a good writer should always leave his/her readers wanting more!

avid mystery reader
By Avid Reader
I have read all 10 of these books. I liked the story lines and he was a believable character. However, as the books progressed, he kept getting more and more philosophical. I did not care for that; it did not relate to the stories. I felt it was just words to fill up the book. There were lots of misused words-quiet instead of quite; sat instead of set; could care less instead of couldn't care less being just a few. A good editor could easily correct these. Overall, it was a good series. I also liked the fact that there was no profanity and no sex scenes. I would read another series of books by this author.
