That changes when Thornton's father buys three slaves, William, Ronan, and Henry. Thornton loathes slavery and realizes that for the first time in fifteen years, his father--and his father's rifle--are outnumbered. Depressing laws in early 19th century Missouri
By Ian J. Miller
This book involves settler-farmers and is set in Missouri in the early 19th century. Marcus Guthrie is something of a tyrant who beats his wife, and when his son, Thornton, misbehaved out in the fields when very young, he shot at him and nicked an ear. (This is unrealistic. A master sniper would have real trouble doing this deliberately with a modern rifle, and weapons of that time were a completely different matter.) Early in the book, Marcus decides to take on three slaves to keep the farm going, while he sits back and partakes of too much alcohol. Thornton effectively has to work in the same way as the slaves, so Thornton is effectively a slave, except he sleeps in the main house. The book is essentially an account of life of slaves in those times, except that Thornton, effectively being one of them, sneaks in books to one who can read. Later, it becomes too much, and they plan a slave escape.

The book has excellent descriptions, the atmosphere seems real, the characters are well drawn and overall it gives a picture of what life might have been like. (I have no idea as to how accurate it is.) There are some rather strong examples of brutality towards slaves, and the failings of the law at the time towards slaves, women, and just about anyone except the property owner. The book is very introspective, and a lot of time is spent on what the characters, and particularly Thornton, are feeling. Having said that, there are surprisingly few clues as to why certain decisions were taken while other possibilities were rejected. There are a number of references to Rip van Winkle, and the end of the book contains a major scene that occurs twenty years after the bulk. While it is a major scene, there was no lead-up explaining how the characters got into this situation, and for me, that was a little like having Hamlet's youth, his return to see the ghost, then everything deleted until the final scene. To summarize, the book is interesting, a lot of research went into it, but it really missed the chance to make a real impact. As for value for money, I think it is underpriced.

A Crime is Not Erased, thus Fear the Hangman
By Scarlett Jensen
It is 1834 in Colombia, Missouri and the protagonist, Thornton, is a 15 year old boy. He has built up a sentiment of hatred towards Marcus Guthrie who has handled him, his son, his slaves and his wife without mercy and robbed them from their dreams while brutally humiliating them. Thornton risks his life in their strife to be emancipated from Guthrie ' s shackles. Thornton wants to blossom like the crops he tended.

Guthrie bought slaves for labour on Guthrie s Farms and said: " they weren't like white men,....God did not intend for them to walk about like white men." Thus with that he implicated loss of freedom, deprivation and cruelty for the slaves.

The story takes us through a struggle to loosen the unfortunate from the intolerable discrimination of a drunkard while they lived under circumstances where one is hunted and ran the risk to be punished with "whippings to the removal of digits with a sharp blade to mutilation and hanging."

Under restricted circumstances one finds violence, betrayal, envy, jealousy, infidelity and love across the colour bar. The trapped conspired and tried to escape a 100 miles west where one answers to no man, but yourself forever.

Laws enforced segregation with guns.Today, 180 years further, there are new laws, and one realizes that how good life can be if you have freedom. We witness how being a slave sometimes felt then, that your spirit bent and shifted positions in order to better carry the burdens of bondage. We see how old men's spirits were permanently buckled.

As the author has training in law, she shares her knowledge of crime and punishment, she shows us how unfair the laws were concerning slaves and women. She discusses the crime of murder through her concept of the Hangman. Law then, would not listen to woman or slave.

Thornton kills and manages to escape his punishment for 20 years. Here the author parallels her story with the story of Rip van Winkle, a book published in 1819. Rip is the character created by Washington Irvine, who awakes to discover he has had the luxury to sleep for 20 years through the hardships of the American Revolution (1765 -1783).

With reference to Thornton this quotation: "His own freedom no longer mattered. His emancipation from Guthrie did everything but set him free. In the eyes of the law, he had committed a murder because: "Killing a white man to defend a slave would be impossible to plead a justifiable defence".

Thornton wished he could slumber for 20 years and awake when his problem was solved. The question is posed: Does a hangman sleep somewhere and when poked/stirred with bad deeds, dare to awaken? Yes, you should be aware of your own life and fear the sleeping hangman, the arm of the law.

Good deeds would not erase the crime and you will always pay for it. The Hangman is indiscriminate." He takes a life even who did not deserve the noose but could not be proved. Killing is never the answer.

This is a historical novel focusing on law, freedom and punishment, with specific reference to the fight for freedom of slaves(1834 -1855). The author has a note of caution to all lawbreakers: "Make no mistake for the rest of your life, you will be a wanted man."

A book for a human rights campaigner, law practitioners and readers who value a touch of literary fiction, touching reality.

`From childhood's hour I have not been as others were' -- Edgar Allan Poe
By Grady Harp
Los Angeles author Deborah Leigh but she has lived and experienced life living in both Europe and the US and she has returned home to lie in downtown Los Angeles. She has experience as a magazine editor, a legal eagle, and an adventurer and all of those ingredients are evident in this her debut novel.

Historical fiction seems a natural genre for Deborah and the manner in which she weaves to dissect the concept of slavery and its effects on both slaves and slave owners, including not only the aspects we have learned form other books and films and history studies, but also that rare aspect of the connections between the paradoxical groups. Love plays a factor here, as does the sacred unity of family.

Deborah has supplied a well-considered synopsis: `Thornton Guthrie works his father's land at gunpoint. The year is 1834, and men of the establishment have total control over their kin. Escaping is out of the question. Estranged from his abused mother, Thornton lives in isolation. That changes when Thornton's father buys three slaves, William, Ronan, and Henry. Thornton loathes slavery and realizes that for the first time in fifteen years, his father--and his father's rifle--are outnumbered. Thornton dreams of joining forces with the men to plot an escape, but as the slave-owner's son, he must convince the men he is on their side while under the watchful barrel of his father's gun. He discovers he has something unexpected in common with thirty-six-year-old William and hazards a dangerous initial contact, hoping it won't cost him everything. Thornton's bravery sets in motion an audacious escape plan that, through a deadly turn of events, becomes a race against the clock further complicated by a crafty interloper on Guthrie Farms, Thornton's ill-timed first romance, and the lethal secret of one of the captives. A tale of treachery, bondage, fellowship, and courage that depicts how one young man's desire to escape his wretched father leads to a much bigger quest: freedom for three generations of prisoners confined by servitude and the law.'

In a unique but very wise structural decision, Deborah divides her story into three parts - Fallow Ground, Crop Rotation, and Harvest - each with double meanings as only a fine writer can serve.

Deborah's prose is poetic: `Thornton Guthrie kept one eye on the Hawken rifle his father pointed at him and one eye on the black-capped chickadees that nested in the eaves of the barn. Both scared him. If he let the birds swoop in and fly away with the spring wheat seeds he had just broadcast, his father might suspect a crop-theft conspiracy between Thornton and the birds and shoot Thornton, the bigger, slower, easier target. Marcus Guthrie had done it before, had shot his son. Thornton was seven and had milked the family cow just a half tick too slow. The animal had been ornery.' etc With an opening this intriguing and strong the reader is assured this is an author who is creating an important reputation on the basis of a debut novel. She has a very bright future. Grady Harp, September 15

A must read
By Martha Macharia
Lady in Waiting acknowledges a single woman's desire to be loved by a young woman but puts emphasis on the importance of growing in the knowledge of her Savior Jesus Christ. It focuses on the qualities that make a godly woman. As a married woman, this book has helped me understand how and why I should recklessly abandoned myself to the Lordship of Jesus Christ. I love this book. The quote found in this book that would summarize it is, "Lady in Waiting is not about finding the right young man, but being the right young woman." I would recommend this book to every woman whether single or married. It is a wonderful book to read. Enjoy learning from it.

Patent Valuation enhances the utility and value of patents by providing IP managers, IP creators, attorneys, and government officials with a useable resource that allows them to use actual or implied valuations when making patent-related decisions.

  • Involves a combination of techniques for describing patent valuation
  • Includes descriptions of various topics, illustrative cases, step-by-step valuation techniques, user-friendly procedures and checklists, and examples

From the Inside Flap

In today's economy, entrepreneurial energies, government attention, and every company's resources are—rightly so—more and more focused on developing various forms of intellectual property (IP), with patents predominantly viewed as the most important of these intellectual property assets. Patent Valuation: Improving Decision Making through Analysis enhances the understanding of these assets by providing IP managers, IP creators, attorneys, and government officials with a hands-on resource that allows them to use actual or implied valuations when making patent-related decisions.

In Patent Valuation, intellectual property experts William Murphy, John Orcutt, and Paul Remus explore a broad range of topics, including:

  • Foundations for patent valuation and decision making

  • Using valuation analysis to improve patent decision making

  • Using disassembly to develop higher quality data

  • Patent valuation techniques

  • Valuing patents using option pricing

  • Unlocking the potential value within patents

Valuation, particularly with regard to patents, continues to be an increasingly important element in management, litigation, administrative proceedings, and basic decision making, as well as in informing complex legislative and policy choices. Filled with illustrative cases, step-by-step valuation techniques, user-friendly procedures and checklists, Patent Valuation is a practical guide accessible to the complete spectrum of decision makers in the patent process.

From the Back Cover

Praise for Patent Valuation

"With no nonsense or intellectual posturing, the authors tell us what a patent valuation is really about . . . in real life. Readable, sound, and eminently useful, the authors have presented many new and practical insights about the valuation process and about the nature of patents as business assets. While focused on patents, their insights apply to any intellectual property and, in fact, to any valuation. Professionals, corporate managers, attorneys, and anyone else in the IP world will find themselves attached to this clearly written book." —Gordon V. Smith, author of Trademark Valuation and Intellectual Property

"Innovation is the key to success for individuals, companies, and entire nations. Patents are the key to providing a marketplace for innovation. In Patent Valuation, Murphy, Orcutt, and Remus cut through the legal complexities of patents to help you figure out your bottom line—what are they worth?" —Jon Dudas, President of FIRST, Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property, and Director of the United States Patent and Trademark Office, 2005–2009

"Effective management of IP assets is enhanced when decision making takes into consideration the value of the assets. This new work by William Murphy, John Orcutt, and Paul Remus presents a number of accepted models for calculating value and practical application of these models. I highly recommend Patent Valuation as a reference for those IP professionals who want to leverage greater value from their IP assets." —David Koris, General Counsel, Head of Intellectual Property, Shell International BV, The Hague, Netherlands

"Going beyond the conventional primer, this book provides a practical framework that incorporates the art of defining a value proposition with the science of quantitative examples to drive a productive dialogue of patent valuation." —Rajiv Patel, Partner, Fenwick & West LLP

"Patent Valuation" by William J. Murphy is an excellent book on the subject
By Stanley H. Kremen
William Murphy approached the mathematics of valuing patents and intellectual property in a straightforward manner. His approach is more impressive than the basic three-alternatives approach of (1) cost to replace, (2) current market value, and (3) present value of present income stream. The approach of this book assists the IP professional to make decisions regarding not only the existing patent portfolio but also whether it is worth applying for patents on new inventions.

Too basic. It didn't explain how to value a patent on real world.

I thought prayer was one way, now I know God sends a message back
By Lori St.Angelo
If you feel you haven't communicated with God for a while, or haven't been in touch with God, this book will teach you how to listen for His message. Then you'll realize God has been sending you messages all along your life's journey. Have you ever had deja vu? Have you ever had a dream that came true? Have you ever prayed and had a dream about your prayer? This book is very helpful in learning to listen to the messages that God is sending you. I saw the dreams, but didn't understand the messages until I read this book. I was in the category of "Though hearing, they do not hear." (Math 13:13). I was very busy and troubled and didn't understand the message. So, I thought it couldn't be a message - just a dream. This book has helped me really see that God has a message he wants me to hear. Each chapter explains a different way God communicates to us in our lives. There are lots of examples from the authors about how God has communicated with them and with others. Best of all, it teaches you how to listen.

Hearing and Understanding the Voice of God
By S. Augustine
Eleven authors share personal testimonies and teachings on how to be sensitve to God's voice and his leading. Chapter 5 "Ascending into the Supernatural" by Katie Souza really spoke to me and helped me to reflect on how Jesus saw and only did what The Father was doing (John 14). Other chapters include dreams, visions, the prophetic, prayer and others.

Become a Listener to our Lord
By Robert A. Burns
Eleven authors provide for us their life stories of just not hearing, but understanding the voice of our Lord. These are just special, unique, and excellent learing-for-us experiences of Godly men and women.
Read about the love between Therea and Kevin and how God speaks to them in the chapter entitled 'Hearing Aids'.
Read the concluding chapter by Todd Hunter...the summerizer!
Of interest is that the end of each chapter there is 'more'information about the author of that chapter. It is great to know...to grow...to learn....isn't it?
These life stories teach about the voice of the supernatural God who loves us so, so much.
I am always so interested in writings that teach spiritual growth and these authors are just excellent. Read and grow as you need Him daily to help understand How Great He Is! Wow!

The Sarasota School of Architecture, 1941-1966, by John Howey

The years: 1941 to 1966. The place: Sarasota, Florida. The story: a sudden burst of fresh, innovative houses by a group of Americans who caught the imagination of the international architectural community.

Inflected by local climate, construction practices, regional culture, and Florida life-style, the work of the Sarasota school of architecture -- founded by Ralph Twitchell and counting Paul Rudolph, Mark Hampton, Victor Lundy, and Gene Leedy among its practitioners -- marks a high point in the development of regional modernism in American architecture.

Although the Sarasota school wasn't a consciously organized movement, it was an important chapter in American modernism that, unlike the earlier Bay Area school and Chicago school, has received little study or published scholarly treatment. John Howey, who practices architecture in the region, provides the first solid documentation of the Sarasota group's designs and theories. He has interviewed all of the surviving architects and original clients and has included a rich archive of photographs by Ezra Stoller, Alexandra Georges, and others whose views, particularly of the houses built between 1950 and 1960, gained world-wide exposure when they were first published forty years ago.

Howey first investigates the early influences on the Sarasota group, particularly of Frank Lloyd Wright in Florida. He then discusses such pivotal events as the opening of Ralph Twitchell's office in 1936 and the arrival of Paul Rudolph in 1941. Later chapters illustrate the effect of World War II on the Sarasota architects; early postwar successes of Twitchell and Rudolph; the influences of the Bauhaus and International Style; the tendency of various Sarasota architects to create their own design directions the arrival of Victor Lundy in 1954; the effect of changing economic, social, and political agendas on Sarasota's culture; and the philosophy and results of the Sarasota school.

GOOD Mid-Century Modernism
By Edward J. Shannon, ArCH
This is the story of a group of talented young architects who were in the right place at the right time. The time (1946-66) was when America was in a building boom, the public wanted fresh, clean designs. Sarasota was a growing town and Modern Architecture was going to change the world. The Father of it all was an architect named Ralph Twitchell. In 1940 Twitchell hired a young intern architect named Paul Rudolph. Rudolph would go onto Harvard GSD, serve in the Navy and return to Sarastoa in 1946, and then become Twitchell's partner in 1950. The two of them, with a group of other talented architects (most notably Victor Lundy) would go on to design some extraordinary custom homes, churches and schools. Their architecture stressed the tectonic (the use of new technologies). Although the Sarasota aesthetic was in similar vein to the California post- war architecture, it also was heavily derivative of a Florida vernacular architecture. Rudolph's early philosophy stressed five points: the Clarity of construction; Maximum economy of means; Simple overall volumes penetrating vertically and horizontally; Clear geometry floating above the Florida Landscape; Honesty in details and in structural connections. It is always a treat to see his pen and ink renderings. A must for the serious student of modernism.

Architects who flew too close to the sun
By Michael S. McGill
John Howey does an excellent job of connecting the place, the time, and the influence of Frank Lloyd Wright and Walter Gropius, to explain the development and evolution of a fine group of architects who practiced in Sarasota beginning in the 1940s, and a few of whom remain even today. While he ends his book on a down note, the book itself and the hard work and dedication of the Sarasota Architectural Foundation have resulted in a revived interest in the work of these architects. Hopefully, efforts to save and restore their surviving masterworks will succeed, despite the forces of McMansionization at work in Sarasota.

The Authoritative Volume of the Sarasota School
By Gary Roberts
Although a coined expression, "the Sarasota School" is deserved of a chronicling. John Howey has done a masterful job of capturing the spirit of this area's architectural movers and shakers from the 1940s through the the 1960s or thereabouts. The book profiles the significant architects and the not so significant wannabes that skated along on the coat tails of the greats. Chances are, if John Howey had not documented school of thought and philosophy, no one else would have. This is the authoritative volume on a group of individual architects located in the very specific place of Sarasota, Florida and its connection to the much broader Mid-Century Modernism Movement that swept the country.

The Visions of Isobel Gowdie: Magic, Witchcraft and Dark Shamanism in Seventeenth-Century Scotland, by Emma Wilby

The witchcraft confessions given by Isobel Gowdie in Auldearn, 1662, are widely celebrated as the most extraordinary on record in Britain and this book provides the first full-length examination of the confessions and the life and character of the woman behind them. Their descriptive power, vivid imagery, and contentious subject matter have attracted considerable interest on both academic and popular levels. The author’s discovery of the original trial records, deemed lost for nearly 200 years, provides a starting point for an interdisciplinary endeavor to separate Isobel’s voice from that of her interrogators, identify the beliefs and experiences that informed her testimony, and analyze why her confessions differ so markedly from those of other witchcraft suspects from the period. In the course of these enquiries, the author develops wider hypotheses relevant to the study of early modern witchcraft as a whole, with recent research into Amazonian “dark” shamanism, false-memory generation, and mutual-dream experience, along with literature on marriage-covenant mysticism and protection-charm traditions, all being brought to the investigation of early modern witch-records for the first time. Author Emma Wilby concludes that close analysis of Isobel’s confessions supports the still-controversial hypothesis that in 17th-century Scotland, as in other parts of Europe in this period, popular spirituality was shaped through a deep interaction between church teachings and shamanistic traditions of pre-Christian origin. She also extends this thesis beyond its normal association with beneficent magic and overtly folkloric themes to speculate that some of Europe’s more malevolent and demonological witch-narratives may also have emerged out of visionary rites underpinned by cogent shamanistic rationales.

Review

“Gowdie’s confessions offer probably the most challenging and mysterious material in British witch trials. Emma Wilby subjects them to a long and painstakingly minute analysis, which covers much folkloric material, but also involves a great deal of speculative interpretation. Her book will prove controversial, but is an important contribution to witchcraft studies.” —Katharine Briggs Award Judges Report, 2010

“This is a remarkable book based on remarkable historical documentation . . . an important work and essential reading for all scholars of early modern witchcraft, and of the popular culture of that period more generally.” —James Sharpe, American Historical Review

“An inspired and inspiring assessment of this famous witchcraft case. . . . Through Wilby’s carefully crafted system of speculation, built upon shards of evidence, the historical actors and their belief systems become clearly and convincingly entwined with our understanding of Isobel’s trial and the unique traits for which it is so famous. The result is a deeply complex understanding of the trial that is wholly attributable to Wilby’s admirably creative thinking and painstaking research.” —Janay Nugent, Sixteenth Century Journal

“In this bold and imaginative book, Emma Wilby attempts to understand Isobel by taking us deeply into her culture and spiritual worldview. . . . With meticulous attention to detail, she reconstructs Isobel’s life as a poor, illiterate farmwife: her cultural horizons within the fermtoun, or small agro-pastoral community where she lived; her spiritual worldview, which combined Christianity with many aspects of folklore rooted in earlier cosmologies; and the likely sequence of events that led to her arrest and imprisonment. Wilby gives equally careful attention to the personalities and agendas of the men who questioned her, showing how a unique combination of personal, religious, and political ideologies came together in the small interrogation room, culminating in her remarkable performance. . . . No other author to date has come up with such a cohesive interpretation of Isobel’s confessions. In the end, this book does what good research should: provide us with provocative, original interpretations and raise questions for further exploration. Wilby’s book will be of great interest to folklorists, anthropologists, historians of witchcraft, and of course modern Pagan Witches.” —Sabina Magliocco, California State University, Journal of Folklore Research

“[Wilby's research is] illuminating and thought-provoking, and will therefore be of immense value to those scholars who venture into the complex maze of witchcraft history. . . . Her book is immensely rewarding, whether one agrees with every point or not, and is to be recommended to anyone who wants to have a more intimate understanding of both this region of Scotland at a particular point in its history and the interaction between a highly self-aware Calvinism and older traditions of beneficent and malicious magic.” —Peter Maxwell-Stuart, University of St Andrews, Magic, Ritual, and Witchcraft

“This is in my opinion the finest reconstruction of the thought-world of somebody accused in an early modern witch trial yet made, making sense of elements that most people would find wholly fantastic.” —Ronald Hutton, University of Bristol, Pomegranate

Compelling, wide-ranging, impressive & readable scholarly study
By Green Stone
Emma Wilby's compelling and dense study of the Witchcraft confessions of Isobel Gowdie from 1662 in Scotland, "celebrated as the most extraordinary on record in Britain", is a thoroughly impressive analysis, which does not lack for humor, wit, and subtly intuitive nuances of observation and speculation, to propel one enthusiastically through its 546 pages of text. Then too, the reach of this book is far beyond Isobel herself, though she be its inspiration: reading this book will reveal intriguing details about the lives of practitioners of magic and folk traditions in early modern Europe.

WIlby's study is wide-ranging, making use of some of the most modern studies in the psychology of "recovery of false memories" in psychotherapy, as well as the inriguing existence of "dark" shamanism among the Yanomamo in the Amazon, the more modern mazzeri in Corsica, and elsewhere. She points out that scholars have tended to sentimentalize shamanism and have formerly ignored these "dark" aspects, yet such explorations assist in understanding such things as Isobel's speculated shamanistic rides on plant stalks to shoot at members of her community with "elf arrows," sometimes passionately exclaiming, as she flew, "horse and hattock in the divells name!"

Scholar though she is, Wilby clearly takes delight, as any vital, robust and imaginative person among us will, in the passionate, imaginative, lusty, altogether charming spirit of Isobel, which innocently, ironically and perhaps tragicomically, shines through in testimonies given to persons who would use them to eventually put her to death. Wilby often reveals an open admiration for these aspects of Isobel, for instance by labelling a section of her book, "Isobel's Beautiful Curses." (pg 186)Those of us who will most enjoy this book, are those who, like one senses of Wilby, believe that Isobel Gowdie embodied qualities, folk expressions, magical practices, extraordinary imaginative capacities, or simple human passions, which are of great value, and which can and should and indeed will live on in whatever unique way these soulful things unveil themselves today in our midst. I am so grateful to Wilby for introducing Isobel to me!

Wilby has undertaken an impressively broad exploration of every aspect of Isobel's life and that of the lives of many persons associated with Isobel's confessions in her Witchcraft trial, including the notary, as well as investigations of Scottish bardic or oral tradition, Scottish fairy lore and the "demonology" and the marriage-with-Christ theologies of the covenanting Protestants in Scotland.

On the issue of malefic magic, again Wilby strides boldly ahead where other scholars fear to tread. She does not feel obliged, as we may surmise many have formerly done, to paint Isobel as a saint in order to defend her from the savage treatment and probable execution to which she was subjected, all for matters, events, beliefs, views and tales which barely left the confines of the interior of Isobel's own mind, in her rich and fertile, visionary and shamanistic realm of imagination.

Wilby reveals her own comfort with the whole range of human experience, reviling no shadow area of the psyche, and is able to put together a sophisticated, rich, broad and deep speculative interpretation of the meaning of Isobels' confessions. Thus, by the end of the tale, Isobel is portrayed as a 17th Century Scottish visionary or shaman, linked with other cultural forms of dark shamanism, as well as to the European folklore about the "Wild Hunt." With regard to ISobel's confessions of making a pact with the "divell" and having "carnall cowpulation and dealing" with this "meikle black roch man", Wilby nimbly and dextrously lays these witchcraft allegations against Isobel back at the feet of the Protestant churches from whence she came, pointing out how it was the church itself which created all notions of pacts with spirits, and marriage with the particular spirit of Jesus, the intimate consummation of which was supposed to be so full of such rich delights. "Ideas about the benefits to be gained through contracting with supernatural spirits were fundamental to Protestant theology." (pg 402) and "The private spiritual covenant was widespread among the pious Nairnshire convenanters." (pg 404)

Moreover, Wilby points out with sound common sense, if it was "the divell" who was the spirit associated by the Protestant ministers with such delights of the common man and woman's life as dancing, singing, music and celebrations, ale and jokes and sexual joy, as well as all the lively folk lore and magic practiced in every culture, while the Christian God was associated with only dry and dull pious things and the boring sermons in church, why in the world would the common people not begin to think that this "divell" the ministers spoke of, was really more their kind of person? THe Scots common folk, as Wilby points out, were an earthy and feisty sort, who though apparently socially pressured to go to church, would often behave rudely in church when bored, or interrupt the prating minister by objecting, "God hast not said all thou hast said."

Wilby doesn't cringe away from the idea that Isobel may indeed have practiced "malefic magic", and yet she points out that poor women like Isobel living in 17th century Scotland, vulnerable to injustices at the hands of their Lairds, and who "did not conform to covenanting mores", were people who "would have stood outside the law at the best of times, and any attempt to obtain legal redress would have been doomed to failure." (pg 183). She also points out that Scots were quite known for their revenge and cursing, "The best curses of all are to be found in the Highlands of Scotland." (184) "Flyting" and Public Cursing were common in the culture, particularly effective with one's hair shaken loose and knees bared. Given how profoundly any possibility for social justice was stacked against cottar's wives like Isobel Gowdie in Scotland in 1662, I hope we can see from the vantage point of (sort-of) democracy in 2011, that we should praise any such woman, then or now, who esteems herself highly enough to long for justice and seek it in her own magical manner.

One thing would help in reading this book: the addition of a glossary by which to translate some terms of old Scots language. Isobel's confessions are presented exactly as written in the old lanuage, and not all of these words are easily understood by a non-scholar or non-Briton such as myself, though many are subsequently translated elsewhere in the text.

A highly entertaining, fascinating book.

brilliant, thrilling scholarly text that dramatically advances Witchcraft Studies
By Randy P. Conner - David H. Sparks
I can't praise this book enough. I chose it as one of the texts for my upcoming "Wisewomen and Witches" graduate course before it was published, and am I glad I did! For those who appreciate Hutton's work, you'll find equally scholarly writing and referencing here. For those like myself who find Hutton's work extremely problematic, you'll find here an illuminating account of how non-Christian and hybrid beliefs did not die thanks to Christianity satisfying everyone--how ludicrous--but rather metamorphosed and innovated in conjunction with epoch and locality. Wilby, like Ginzburg, "Ecstasies," does not shy away from shamanistic links. Nor does she launch, as Hutton, Diane Purkiss, and Cynthia Eller do, misogynistic attacks on those like Margaret Murray, Jane Harrison, and Marija Gimbutas, whose insights, in spite of flaws, were brilliant. Wilby's book respects the past and yet offers a very postmodern, multidimensional view of her subject that others in her field would most assuredly not have been capable of achieving. BRAVO!!!

If you buy any book
By James
Once obtaining and reading this book, all others on witchcraft pale in comparison. This is a holy text as far as I'm concerned. It's very difficult to obtain, and I had to order directly from the publisher. Seek it out: you won't regret it.

cant recommend these enough
By TJ Brown
I think this series of titles is fantastic. A fun romp down memory lane. Wow, was Raw sketchy back in the early to mid-90s. I still have a lot of these gems on random tapes / dvds, and its all out there on Youtube and the WWE site, so its a fun ride-along as you riff through the book. Even if not its surely going to bring back some memories, some laughs and groans. And there was good wrestling stuff buried in there too! I look forward to further editions on the Raw shows, and the other stuff this group puts out on Coliseum videos and other wrestling-related fodder. And the price is right on the Kindle for all of this. Great stuff and i raise the glass in a toast.

Great concept, funny guys.
By T.J. Birkhead
This is such a great concept--reviewing every RAW!

The author's are very funny and it makes for a great trip down Nostalgia Avenue. They provide great humor in addition to some great tidbits. I found it was a great resource to iron out some of my old memories and getting to know the plethora of jobbers was a hoot.

My only problem, and indeed it is MY problem, is that whenever the authors (they take turns reviewing months) don't like or care of a certain wrestler, they'll certainly let us know. And know again. And again. And remind us again. And again. And did I mention that they'll mention how much they hate a guy?

Don't get me wrong, that's of course their right as the authors. They're doing all the watching after all. But it gets tedious to read how much they hate Crush, or Yokozuna, or Tatanka, etc. especially when I personally don't agree with them. At least on some of their takes. Ordinarily, I would be fine reading a differing opinion. But since a handful of guys they don't like keep cropping up almost every week (IRS, especially), I stars to make for a less fun read. In fact, I bought the 1993 and did enjoy it. I borrowed the 1994 version from Prime and had to return it a quarter of the way through because of the continuing rants against the same handful of people. Reading about how much they didn't like guys became just as painful as what they felt watching the same guys they hated. But while they certainly got their frustration through, it quickly stopped being a fun read FOR ME.

Most people probably won't have the same problem as me, and most people probably will agree with them. But I've always had a soft spot for these lovable midcarders like Men on a Mission and IRS so it just became a chore, even though I was getting a great kick out of the concept, and largely, the rest of what they were doing here.

Still, I quite enjoyed 1993 and maybe someday with a better frame of mind I can go back to 1994 and the rest. The authors are really funny and they really did a heck of a job considering the daunting task.

Great stuff just in need of some Yoko love
By Matthew
Great stuff, although I definitely think you guys are a bit harsh on Yokozuna. Sure he wasn't much in the work rate department, but he carried the heel side of the card throughout the year in the main events.
