Literally lost in the book
By good for passing time
I loved this book! It was a wonderful read and had an interesting side story. I was worried I wouldn't like it since I love the movie, but it didn't take away from the movie storyline. In fact, it added a bit of the pieces of how they fell in love. I would recommend it to any Beauty and the Beast fan.

Good addition to the movie.

I thought Lost in a Book was a good addition to the story. I liked that the story was related to the movie, and the readers got to see how Belle struggled with being in the castle. I thought the ending was obvious, but decent. Belle seems a little unobservant in this. I feel like she would not be so ditzy, and in some parts of the book I find it hard to believe. With that being said, I fall in love with Chip every time I read/watch anything to do with Beauty and the Beast. Great character development. If you like Beauty and the Beast, this will be a great read.

Imaginative characters, clever storytelling and a poignant message. I couldn't put it down. I was lost to and in love with every word of Lost in a Book. It is absolutely superb! A new classic, to be sure.

I have organized the book as a series of independent Scratch projects – each of which describes how to design and build an interesting and challenging Scratch program. Each project progresses in stages – from a simple implementation to increasingly complex versions. You can read these chapters in any order you like, although I have tried to arrange the chapters in an increasing order of challenge. Programming is a powerful tool that can be applied to virtually any field of human endeavor. I have tried to maintain a good diversity of applications in this book. You will find the following types of projects: -Simple ball games -Puzzle games -Memory games -Science simulations -Math games -Geometric designs Learn the concepts: As the experts will tell you, concepts are really understood and internalized when you apply them to solve problems. The purpose of this book is to help you apply Scratch and CS concepts to solve interesting and challenging programming problems. Every chapter lists, at the very start, the Scratch and CS concepts that you will apply while building that project. Learn the design process: Besides these technical concepts, you will also learn the "divide and conquer" approach of problem-solving. This is a fancy term for the technique of breaking down a bigger problem into many smaller problems and solving them separately one by one. You will also learn the “iterative design process” for designing programs. This is another fancy name that describes the idea that something complex can be designed in a repeated idea -> implement -> test cycle, such that in each cycle we add a little more complexity. You will also learn a bit of “project management”. Project management helps you undertake a project, such as creating a complex program, and complete it in a reasonable time, with reasonable effort, and with reasonable quality. It involves things such as planning tasks, tracking their progress, etc. Audience for the book: The book is intended for students who are already familiar with Scratch. The level of challenge is tuned for middle- and high-school students, but elementary-school students who have picked up all the concepts in an introductory course might also be able to enjoy the projects presented in this book. The book would be a great resource for teachers who teach Scratch programming. They could use the projects to teach advanced tricks of programming and to show how complex programs are designed. Finally, the book is for anyone who wants to get the wonderful taste of the entertaining and creative aspect of Computer Programming.

About the Author
This is Abhay's fourth programming book after publishing two volumes on Logo Programming in 2011 and "Learn CS Concepts with Scratch" in 2016. In the constructivist tradition of Piaget and Papert, Abhay views Computer Programming not just as a useful skill to build careers, but also as a "powerful medium for learning" in which students actively engage in a creative, entertaining, and intellectually challenging pursuit. Abhay has been conducting Scratch classes for middle and high school students since 2007. He divides his time between Seattle, USA and Pune, India.

A great resource to explore and code!

Scratch is clearly the best first language for anyone who wants to learn programming. While a lot of books and online material show how Scratch can be used by elementary school kids for simple animations and games, there isn't much out there to show Scratch's potential as a platform for doing challenging work. This book fills that gap. It assumes that reader already knows Scratch (although the writer has provided a supplement that describes basic concepts), and provides a series of interesting and challenging projects. What I like the most is the easy tutorial-like fashion in which each chapter shows how to build the program step by step. There is a uniform methodology that you get to learn as a side-effect. I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to get ready for high school computer science.

About the Author
SRA salutes Dr. Don Parker, whose remarkable insight, creativity, energy, and concern have helped educators meet the individual learning needs of millions of children over the past 40 years. Parker published his first SRA Reading Lab in February 1957. The labs answered the question of how to provide individualized, multilevel learning for students. The story of the man with an idea and a box begins in 1950. While studying for his master's degree in psychology, Parker took a teaching position in a rural Florida school district. He says the superintendent wanted someone "to help our children read better." Although Parker didn't have classroom experience, he had taken psychology and education courses that he says gave him "ideas about individual differences among learners." Soon these ideas were energized as he tested 3,000 students at ten schools. Eventually, he focused on a class of 32 seventh-grade students with reading levels varying from second grade to twelfth grade. Parker wanted to help these students learn to read at a pace and level that was appropriate for their varied abilities. He began selecting and cutting out lessons from reading workbooks, sorting them by reading level, and putting them into folders. To avoid embarrassing any students, he didn't designate the folder levels by grade numbers; instead, he colored a band around the edge of each folder. He created keys so the students could check their own work and eventually move to the next color level. There were ten color-coded levels. Finally, Parker consolidated all the folders and keys in an old tomato box. This old box of folders and key cards became the earliest form of the Reading Lab. Over the next five years, Parker successfully opened a reading lab at the University of North Carolina and began work on a doctoral degree at Columbia University. Repeatedly encouraged to market his reading lab, Parker took his box (now a cardboard box painted blue) to Science Research Associates. A publisher of psychological, achievement, and vocational guidance tests, SRA wanted to branch out into learning materials. SRA was looking for new ideas. Parker's individualized, multilevel lab format-as opposed to textbooks-was a new concept for the classroom. He presented his innovative program to SRA, and the publisher grasped the potential of this unique learning tool. February 1957 was the publishing date for the SRA Reading Labs! Shortly after the first Labs debuted, Parker received his doctoral degree from Columbia University. Parker eventually became SRA's "scientist in residence." Over the years, other distinguished authors joined Parker in writing updated versions of the Reading Lab, elementary school versions, and supporting materials. Parker traveled extensively, teaching children the world over how to use his multilevel box, SRA Reading Labs. Over the past 40 years, multilevel teaching-learning systems developed by Parker in reading, spelling, vocabulary, literature, and elementary science have been used by more than 100,000,000 pupils in the U.S. and 62 other countries. The SRA Reading Labs continue to be updated, modernized, and, as always, multilevel. SRA congratulates Dr. Don Parker on his lifetime of achievement in helping children all over the world learn to read by using the SRA Reading Labs.

I loved SRAs as a child and I have 5 children

I bought this for use in my homeschool. I loved SRAs as a child and I have 5 children, so I figured I would get lots of use out of it. I received Reading Laboratory 1c. My oldest is not ready for even the easiest power builders. I thought I was ordering the FIRST laboratory but apparently I should have ordered 1a. These are super expensive but I guess we'll hang on to it and try again next year.

About the Author

David Gentilcore is professor of early modern history at the University of Leicester. He has written widely on the social and cultural history of Italy, from popular religion to the practices of medicine and healing. He is the author of Medical Charlatanism in Early Modern Italy, which was awarded the Jason A. Hannah Medal by the Royal Society of Canada.

The humble tomato has an intriguing history. For many its real history is unknown or irrespective. Italy is said to be THE tomato country. It forms the base of many key Italian dishes, after all yet the reality is quite different... Not so many people will acknowledge Mexico as being the origin of this red, shiny fruit (yes! fruit, technically a tomato is not a vegetable).
Here is an interesting studious, serious, light-hearted and detailed look at the humble tomato, its history and its positioning in society. It is really a mix of everything yet carefully corralled into a compelling read. Whilst technically a history of the tomato in Italy, the book is far from jingoistic or parochial.
Italians did not take immediately to the tomato, viewing it as a sceptical curio from the New World in the mid-1550s. It took a few hundred years before the tomato, or pomidoro, became more established. It wasn't plain sailing. Problems growing tomatoes didn't help. Nor did many toxic, inedible varieties lead to jubilation and endorsement. Many doctors at the time could not be described as poster children for fruit and vegetables - they actually railed against them for being poisonous and dangerous. Oh, how things have changed!
Over time this scepticism lapsed and Italians, Europeans and the world began to fall in love with the tomato. It is suspected that the author, too, is a lover of the tomato as their enthusiasm shines throughout the book. For such a detailed, learned book it is surprisingly easy-going and accessible. For the academically-minded there is a tremendous bibliography and index at the rear.
There is not a lot more to say. There is a fascinating story to read. An eye-opening sort of story if you let it. A little expensive for a general-interest book perhaps but it might still be a `cheap' source of entertainment and education if you utilise it to the full.

The problem that many other books do not address is the fact that purchasing an item and reselling it on eBay is not as simple as "I bought this item for $30 and sold it on eBay for $50, and it resulted in a $20 profit". If it were that easy, there would be no need for this book. As with every business, there are several expenses, many of which are not so obvious such as eBay commission fees, PayPal commission fees, shipping cost and cost of packaging materials. This book takes all of those things into account and ensures that every item you sell will "cover" those expenses, still resulting in a positive net profit.

This book is geared towards giving you an actual BUSINESS PLAN about how to create a steady monthly cash flow from eBay sales. Included with the book is a 2 excel files which I created to help make sure that every single sale that you make is a profitable one.

1.) The eBay Profit Calculator™ - This is a very user-friendly program which allows you to simply plug in 3 values that you know - Your initial purchase price of the item, how much it will cost to ship the item, and any "listing fees" (which are usually $0 if you do not use any advanced auction features). From there, a mathematical algorithm calculates the exact "breakeven point" that you must list your item for in order to start turning a profit. Any amount greater than the "breakeven number" will result in a guaranteed profit after the transaction is complete and all expenses are paid. In short, the program guarantees that every item you sell results in a monetary gain.

2.) Income vs. Expense spreadsheet - This spreadsheet is also a very user-friendly program which allows you keep track of all income that you make (your "net profit" number as determined by the eBay Profit Calculator™) and expenses (packaging materials, printer ink, paper, etc.). You simply enter in the net profit that you make on every sale and any expense items that you purchased during the month that are related to your eBay business. The program then sums up all income and expenses and takes the difference between the two. That number is you "monthly profit". In other words, that is exactly how much profit you made in any given month from your eBay business.

Every single step of the process and detailed explanations of how to use the profit calculating programs are all clearly explained in the book.
