Doing and Being~Knowledge and Wisdom

This book is about having a fulfilling life by “being” fully human and by seeking wisdom. Instead, most of us focus on “doing” by being focused on doing what’s next on our list and acquiring knowledge—learning. The fundamental grounding for what, how, and why we learn dates back to the 16th and 17th centuries with the discovery of the scientific method that reveres and elevates the world of facts and scientific findings but rejects and discounts other factors such as emotion, language, and the transcendent nature of art and music. Author Julio Olalla discusses ontology—how we are as human beings—and epistemology—how we come to know as human beings. He concludes that if we understand being and wisdom, it opens up a whole new view of what it means to be human. Olalla heads the Newfield Network, focused on ontological coaching—being-and-wisdom-focused coaching—that regards learning as not only acquiring information and knowledge (transactional) but also considering emotion, mood, ethics, and language as a path to true wisdom (transformational). He explores this path in a series of four essays in this book. Olalla says: “Wisdom is not what we know about the world [knowledge], it’s what the world discloses to us. If knowledge can live in greed, wisdom can only live in gratitude. If knowledge belongs to thought, wisdom belongs to the soul. If knowledge creates silos and divisions, wisdom integrates.”
