In this expanded edition, first published in 2004, child and family therapist West (aka The Sleep Lady) further explores the ways parents can teach their infants and toddlers the indispensable skill of falling and staying asleep. West has added the latest pediatric research on sleep safety, pacifier use, and breastfeeding, as well as expanded sections on toddler naps, interpreting newborn cries, and phasing out nighttime feedings. She has also included sections on bedtime baby yoga poses, a chapter on room sharing and bed sharing (encouraging parents to carefully assess their attitudes before making a decision on whether to co-sleep) and postpartum depression. West eschews the cry it out approach, which may leave parents feeling guilty and exhausted. Instead, her Sleep Lady Shuffle is a gentle behavior modification technique that helps babies gradually master solo sleeping and self-soothing. About the Author
Kim West, LCSW-C, is the mother of two and a licensed practicing child and family therapist for more than sixteen years. Known as The Sleep Lady� by her clients, she has helped thousands of tired parents all over the world over the past twelve years to learn to listen to their intuition, recognize their child's important cues and behaviors, and gently create changes that promote and preserve his or her healthy sleep habits.

She has appeared on Dr. Phil, TODAY, NBC Nightly News, Good Morning, America, TLC's Bringing Home Baby, and CNN, and has been written about in a number of publications, including the Wall Street Journal, Baby Talk, Parenting, the Baltimore Sun, USA Today, and the Washington Post. West hosts the sleep section of The Newborn Channel, played in maternity wards in hospitals across the country. She has traveled the country, giving lectures on the importance of sleep for children.

She lives with her family in Annapolis, Maryland.

Our 9 month old goes to sleep just fine by himself

Our 9 month old goes to sleep just fine by himself, however wakes up several times throughout the night and can't put himself back to sleep. We tried the "shuffle" which is standing next to his crib and trying to soothe him. The problem is that he knows we are there and is confused as to why we aren't soothing him, just stands there and cries with his arms up.

This book works

Very rarely do I ever write reviews for anything. And I'm also highly skeptical about reading books to fix parenting issues. This book really helped us though. I have a 16 month old who was still not sleeping through the night and waking me repeatedly. We followed the sleep lady shuffle recommendations and it really worked. I almost can't believe it. We now have a nightly routine, put our son in his crib and walk out of the room and he lies down and goes to sleep. He also now sleeps all night. This book changed our lives. And it really took about 2 weeks to get it accomplished as the book said . There were some rough nights the first week but has just gotten better and better. And I never had to leave my child to cry it out, which I just didn't have the heart to do. Worth every penny. Thank you!!

Tried Everything

I can not stand cry it out. I can't do it. Breaks my heart and I am a big sobby softy about it. I needed a solution where she didn't cry and I didn't cry. This WORKS. In fact it works so well that sometimes when we are going through the routine now, she will go over to her crib, asked to be put in it and put herself down completely. Wonderful. I have my nights back.
