The best of the Smith Wigglesworth books

This is not only the best book I've read about Smith Wigglesworth--in that it benefited me spiritually--but I actually found it more beneficial than reading Wigglesworth's own books. I found the story of his life to be more instructive (for me) than reading what he had to say. Perhaps what he had to say is too far above me for me to really understand thoroughly. I'm not talking about intellectually, of course, but spiritually.
I've read his "collected teachings" and will read again, but I know I am missing much of what he is saying. His life, however, taught me so much, and I think the author portrayed it beautifully in letting it speak for itself, yet adding just enough interpretation to make it more meaningful to the reader.
Something that bothered me at first was Smith saying that the Lord said He was going to "burn up" every bit of Smith Wigglesworth until only Jesus was left. I know the Lord values our individuality. He created us to be individuals, and I believe the closer we come to Him, the more our individuality shows. And certainly Smith had a very distinctive personality, as was pointed out in this book. I realized later that the part of me that God wants to "burn up" is the part that is not good, the part that is blocking the true individual personality from full expression. The more yielded I am to Jesus, the more distinctively MYSELF I am. That is why Smith Wigglesworth was such a strongly individualistic person--he let the Lord get rid of a lot of the stuff that was clouding his true self.
I know that Smith sometimes used what I am sure were inappropriate ways to release his faith for people's healing, but he knew when he was truly operating in faith and therefore had no failures. Oh, to know that kind of faith! His example is to live with a continuous awareness of the God's presence.

Great to create a intimacy with God.

I consider this book as a revelation of a great men of God who walked with God, and how we can live at this same level of Intimacy with God in our daily life, I love his great hunger and thirst for more abundance and a depth relationship with the Spirit of God.

Love the book.

I recommend it.

Decent scientific thriller; Must love charts

Definitely not my favorite Crichton book. Bought it recently to re-read - first time was many years ago. It wasn't so boring that I had trouble getting through it - in fact, I read it in one sitting. But it wasn't nearly as exciting as I remembered. It's very intentionally scientific at many points, to the extent that it feels like you're reading a journal article complete with charts/graphs instead of a novel.

The climax of the story, in my opinion, kind of comes and goes without a whole lot of memorability and the story ends pretty suddenly. I found myself thinking, "Wait, is that it?" towards the end. Felt like a lot of build up for a kind of mediocre finish.

As usual, Crichton did a ton of research while writing his book and it shows. There's no lack of very specific terminologies and procedural descriptions.

One thing that may not affect other people like it did me - sometimes my wife and I like to read together with each of us taking turns reading sections out loud. We started this book that way, but had to stop because of the many graphs and charts that we kept having to try to describe. Curious how an audiobook version would handle this.

Overall, I'd read it again in several years but it didn't leave much of an impression.

Horror without Exclamation Points

As embarrassing as this sounds, I had never read a Michael Crichton novel when I purchased “The Andromeda Strain,” first published in 1969. In my defense, I’ve seen the 1971 movie many times over the years. And after finally reading the book, I found that the movie was completely faithful to the story, thanks to screenwriters Crichton and Nelson Gidding.

What I found most intriguing is Crichton’s clinical style in telling the story of a military satellite that has returned to earth, infected with a virus from space. The writing is meticulous as it carefully describes the protocols around retrieving the satellite and examining the only two victims still alive—a Sterno-huffing old man and a baby—after the virus wipes out the tiny population of Piedmont, Arizona. This is an interesting approach to building tension without resorting to hysterics. But don’t fool yourself—the terror is real as we learn that nuclear weapons may be needed to halt the spread. In the movie, the lead scientist Dr. Jeremy Stone is played by Arthur Hill—not the most exciting guy on the planet but one whose quiet ways can come off as disturbing. I can imagine Hill narrating the audio book, letting the horror unfold as the small group of scientists deep underground in Nevada go about trying to stop something they don’t fully understand.

Here’s my recommendation. Read the book, then rent the movie. You’re welcome.

Not as good as expected

This book was a disappointment for me. I realize that this Crichton's early work, however, I was expecting more from such a well known title. The book was actually fun for me in the sense of the difference time can make. He wrote from his contemporary surroundings and technology of the day, the latter of which has advanced considerably in the last few decades. Crichton's description of "computers clicking and whirring away" would leave any young person thinking they were made of wood and stone. Also the mention of General Dynamics Electric Boat Division put a smile on my face, as that is where my dad worked for nearly 40 years.

For the most part, however, this was a plodding and pedantic read. I got the feeling that for most of the book Crichton was simply showing off his knowledge of the medical field. The narrative spends too much time explaining in excruciating detail the different medical and biological concepts being used, and not enough actual story-telling.

Expensive, I'll concede that, but substantially expensive to produce due to the sheer volume of content (888 pages!) and number of quality photos throughout. So don't expect it to ever get discounted much more than the fifty some dollar price reduction on Amazon as of the fall of 2011 (which is a bargain as I paid the full price shown of $225 when it first hit, yet I still think it was reasonably priced all considered). If it goes even lower grab it, but you might want to consider grabbing it now as the production cost is so high that inflation will make it impractical to reprint in its present pristine form. In that respect the first edition will become a classic collectible I think.

One Of A Kind

No stone is highly revered as the Diamonds. Their brilliance and fancy shapes
have a strong influence on men. Miss Cunningham has delivered a tour de force
on this particular Gem. All the information from the sources to the finish products
are beautifully written.

It is expensive but worth buying because Diamon Compendium is one of a kind.

The Definitive Source

This is a hard cover, heavy tome of nearly 900 pages printed on good quality paper with many pertinent illustrations. It is a very good book crammed with accurate and useful information about diamond, including origin, crystallography, global occurrences, exploration and mining, cutting and polishing, grading and identification. It also discusses simulants and man-made diamonds. It is not written as a story to be read from cover to cover, but as a reference work with a fully descriptive gemmological text to be consulted for its specific topics, some of which are explored in greater scientific depth. The book contains 20 chapters divided into many sections discussing and explaining all aspects of diamonds from physical properties to mining methods and recovery in a plant, including descriptions of techniques, equipment and instruments used in measuring the properties of diamonds. The author took great care in presenting the correct terms for everything discussed. For instance she explains the different meaning of form and habit and why lonsdaleite is not a kind of diamond (type III diamond) but a different mineral. The chapter on colour discusses extensively the perception of colour while other chapters discuss colour enhancement treatments and recutting to enhance brilliance. The chapters on identification of natural diamond, simulants and synthetic diamond are very good. The wide range of topics discussed in this book makes it an eminent textbook and a handbook with practical tips for use in gemmology and in specific diamond courses and it could be considered the `definitive' reference book on diamond.

About the Author

ROBERT E. RICKLEFS is Curators' Professor of Biology at the University of Missouri–St. Louis, where he has been a member of the faculty since 1995. His teaching at Missouri, and previously at the University of Pennsylvania, has included courses in introductory and advanced ecology, biogeography, evolution, and biological statistics. Bob’s research has addressed a broad range of topics in ecology and evolutionary biology, from the adaptive significance of life-history traits of birds, to island biogeography and the community relationships of birds, herbivorous insects, and forest trees. In particular, he has championed the importance of recognizing the impact of large-scale processes on local ecological assemblages of species. Bob has published in numerous journals including Science, Nature, PNAS, Evolution, Ecology, Ecology Letters, and the American Naturalist. His contributions have been recognized by honorary doctorates from the Universit� Catholique de Louvain (Belgium), Aarhus University (Denmark), and the University of Burgundy (France). He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences of the United States. Bob published the first edition of The Economy of Nature in 1976 and is joined by a coauthor for the first time with this seventh edition.

RICK RELYEA is Director of the Jefferson Project at Lake George for Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, a groundbreaking partnership between Rensselaer, IBM, and the FUND for Lake George. For the project, Relyea leads a team of Rensselaer scientists, engineers, computer scientists, and other experts who are using the latest in science and technology to understand, predict and enable a resilient ecosystem for nearby Lake George.

From 1999 to 2014, Relyea was at the University of Pittsburgh. In 2005, he was named the Chancellor’s Distinguished Researcher and in 2014 he received the Tina and David Bellet Award for Teaching Excellence. From 2007-2014, Relyea served as the director of the university’s field station, the Pymatuning Laboratory of Ecology, where he oversaw a diverse set of ecological field courses and facilitates researchers from around the world.

Rick has taught thousands of undergraduate students in introductory ecology, behavioral ecology, and evolution. His research is recognized throughout the world and has been published in Ecology, Ecology Letters, American Naturalist, PNAS, and other leading ecological journals. The research spans a wide range of ecological and evolutionary topics including animal behavior, sexual selection, ecotoxicology, disease ecology, phenotypic plasticity, community ecology, ecosystem ecology, and landscape ecology. Used this book for a general ecology class...loved it! Graphs and figures were super helpful, and it was very easy to read. :)
