Interpreter Suzy Park, the 29-year-old protagonist of this ambitious first novel, carries a lot of baggage: two rocky relationships with married men, estrangement from her sister, a series of unsatisfying jobs and the guilt of having cut ties with her parents before both were shot dead in an unsolved double murder. The question is not whether Park can survive the trauma, but whether this hybridrelationship/mystery/suspense/ Korean immigrant story can. The cross-pollination of forms creates depth, but it also creates weight. The dark, doomed-to-fail relationships Park engages in can be viewed as a function of her disconnection from life following the murder of her parents, but these relationships also deaden the tone of an already very serious novel, and the present tense narration has a dreamlike quality that compounds the problem. Luckily, as the novel progresses, Kim's talents become apparent: a good eye for detail, an excellent prose style and the ability to create compelling characters. When Park stumbles across a clue about her parents' five-year-old murder, the urgency of the mystery gradually overcomes the inertia of her relationships, and the search for her now missing sister contributes additional suspense. As Park's investigations lead closer to the truth, the novel's gloom becomes a luminous darkness, and the latter half has an almost hypnotic effect, marred only by a rushed ending. This is an intriguing, tortured portrait of a second-generation Korean-American by a promising young writer.

Rich in detail and grim in outlook, it introduces Suzy Park, a 29-year-old interpreter whose work involves her in a bevy of agencies throughout the five boroughs, from the Immigration and Naturalization Service to the criminal courts. Park is blas‚ about her occupation until a routine translating job reveals that her greengrocer parents were not murdered by random violence, as the police had indicated, but instead had been shot by political enemies. These data provide fodder for Park, and the novel tracks her investigation into what really happened. As she delves, she discovers Korean gangs, gambling and prostitution rings, and an insular culture with its own rules and practices-all intriguing stuff. Nonetheless, readers will be disappointed. While time and place are well captured, the writing is so emotionally flat that one closes the book feeling aroused but ultimately unmoved. Recommended for large, urban collections only.

This was quite a book. Very nicely woven mystery although very melancholy. It was hard to figure out the mystery until the very end. Really nice writing style.

One of the best I've read in quite awhile

As other reviewers have noted, The Interpreter offers a third-person view of one Suzy Park whose life up to now can best be described as dysfunctional. She's survived two affairs with married men (although she's remarkably comfortable in her "mistress" role), dropped out a first-rate college, drifted from job to job, and kept only one friend.
Her present job, as a contract interpreter working for an agency, has held her longer than others. On one of her jobs, she translates for a witness who happens to know something about her parents, who died of gunshot wounds in 1995. She decides to investigate their death, her own past and the mysterious disappearance of her older sister Grace, who has always been distant.
Although the heroine is not especially appealing (you want to shake her and send her to a therapist, pronto), her life makes sense in terms of her background. A dysfunctional life comes from a supremely dysfunctional family -- with layers of mystery.
I had trouble putting the book down, although it had qualities of literary fiction and "girl books" as well as murder mystery. The author manages to give us a fresh view of New York, which has been the scene of so many novels. As I read I fondly remembered the Long Island Railroad and the stops on the Number 7 Queens line -- and the way they're counted out by riders. She also gives us a gritty but entertaining view of the Korean immigrant lifestyle as well as the realities of the legal proceedings where she translates. She reads between the lines and occasionally oversteps her boundaries, knowing immigrants have their own code and their own realities.
The sense of setting and the pacing make this novel succeed, despite the unsympathetic main character and the even less sympathetic romantic entanglements. Along with Suzy, we are exposed to one mystery after another. Why did the family move so often? Where did they get money to buy a store? Where are the family's citizenship papers? Why is the sister so aloof? Who murdered the parents and why?
Amazingly, Suki Kim ties up all these loose ends in the last two short chapters. The story behind the murder makes everything fit together, even the reason for her sister's aloofness (if we read between the lines).
The ending is satisfying but not happy. I am reminded of the oft-quoted psychological truth: People need meaning to be happy, but meaning doesn't necessarily bring happiness.
Heroine Suzy Park can now make a patterned quilt out of the scraps of her life. We're satisfied. She may never be.

While most studies of religion in Southeast Asia focus on doctrines or governmental policy, contributors to this volume recognize that religious "things"―statues, talismans, garments, even sacred automobiles―are crucial to worship, and that they have a broad impact on social cohesion. By engaging with `religion in its tangible forms, faith communities reiterate their essential narratives, allegiances, and boundaries, and negotiate their coexistence with competing belief systems. These ethnographic and historical studies of Southeast Asia furnish us with intriguing perspectives on wider debates concerning the challenges of secularization, pluralism, and interfaith interactions around the world.

In this volume, contributors offer rich ethnographic analyses of religious practices in the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Burma that examine the roles materiality plays in the religious lives of Southeast Asians. These essays demonstrate that religious materials are embedded in a host of practices that enable the faithful to negotiate the often tumultuous experience of living amid other believers. What we see is that the call for plurality, often initiated by government, increases the importance of religious objects, as they are the means by which the distinctiveness of a particular faith is “fenced” in a field of competing religious discourses. This project is called “the spirit of things” to evoke both the “aura” of religious objects and the power of material things to manifest “that which is fundamental” about faith and belief.

A must buy, if you can find it, by leaps and bounds...

I bought the english and norwegian version while trying to learn norwegian this past year, with the sole purpose of using it to strengthen my mediocre norwegian skills.

I was blown away, and could not put it down until I finished in the wee hours of the morning. The language (english, I still have not figured out norwegian) in the book is easily digestable, and the story is just so great it will really make your life better for having read it (seriously). I've since bought 5 or 6 copies for a few friends and my brother, and each of them were moved enough to buy a copy or passed their's along to someone else.

The only drawback is finding a copy somewhere, or even worse trying to find one of his other books. I cannot imagine they are anything less than extraordinary. Why this book hasn't hit the US like a lightning bolt - I will never understand.

This book is written extremely well. The main character may not be relatable at all times, but the book is an easy read. It dwells into deep topics while the main character develops into a mature adult.

Many milleniums ago they gifted twelve golden discs to humanity for activation now, to help our collective awareness.
This took her on a six year epic journey to Alaska, Africa, Peru and nine other countries. Her experiences in each country makes fascinating reading, for not alone does she describe the activations of the soular discs but also the amazing synchronicities that guided her all the way. In each country she met wise indigenous elders e.g. the Incas and Hawaiins who share their knowledge with her, and she also records the emotions that each place evoked in her and the connection with the site being visited.
It was an epic journey where she and her group experienced hardship and endurance tests but also moments of profound wisdom and illumination.
If this were merely a travel book it would be very interesting, but each of the journeys gives a fascinating insight into the wisdom and insights of the wise beings encountered there and in many cases the history as it has never been told.
I wish I had read it before visiting Jerusalem because the author opened up new and ancient revelations as she gained access to sites that no tourist ever sees.
Her description of Avebury and surrounding discrict of Glastonbury and Stonehenge which she knows so well would make this book well worth reading, but each country is equally absorbing and inspiring. This is an outstanding book especially for those who are interested in the energies being experienced in this evolutinary age we are living in.

Im sorry but i just couldn't get through the whole thing. I really loved the quote at the start of the book:"In the commonality of our humanity we are all ordinary. In the commonality of our divinity we are all extraordinary "

And i was so looking forward to learning about all of the exotic trips and locations and great insights the author was going to share...but she just seems to talk mostly about how special she is that she is chosen to go on a trip; ie Egypt then tells about falling into water in a pyramid; then climbing a pyramid at night and then i couldnt believe it but shes on to another trip and another exotic location. Something was missing for me- i just didnt care enough about her story -maybe if the writing style didn't irritate me as much I could have learned something at the end but I don't have the patience to get through the rest of the book! I will have to pass on finding out her. -i mean our cosmic destiny I guess.

Beautiful and Inspiring

I borrowed this book from the library as the title intrigued me, not sure I would really get into it, well how wrong was I. The book was amazing, I literally couldn't put it down and raced through each chapter eager to hear the next installment of Jude's incredible journey. It was a tour de force of a spiritual odyssey,informative on so many levels and written with such a genuine passion and humility. Jude made a highly spiritual story so personal.
I promptly ordered my own copy from Amazon, and loving the book so much sent a copy to my dear friend in Canada.
I highly recommend this beautiful book.

About the Author
Shannon Trice-Black is currently a doctoral student in counseling education. She has been a school counselor for over 10 years and continues to maintain a small part-time counseling practice, working with children, adolescents, and adults. Shannon has presented her work and writings on classroom guidance, bullying, and relational aggression at conferences, workshops, and master's level classes. She serves on the board of the Jefferson Counseling Association and the Virginia Association for Counselor Education and Supervision. In addition, Shannon is a member of the Virginia Counselors Association, Virginia School Counselors Association, and American Counseling Association. Julia V. Taylor was a school counselor for Wake County Public Schools in Raleigh, North Carolina. Julia is a nationally recognized public speaker and frequently presents her research on relational aggression to educators at conferences, county and district in-services, and various workshops. She is the Professional Interest Network Bullying Specialist for the American School Counselor Association and serves on the North Carolina School Counselor Association Board as the middle school vice president.
