where is the rest?

There was nothing wrong with this story. It could have been a little more fleshed out but it was fine. Until the end. The book stops at 42%....right in what seems like the middle. But then that's all! I have kindle unlimited but I may have been peeved if I paid.

I have mixed emotions for this story. Usually I can't wait to jump on Ms.West's hot tamale train of stories. This time there were some issues for me with the ending that kind of fell flat. The story line was enjoyable however because of the ending I didn't love it like the rest of Ms. West's stories. First the good stuff. I love the background story of Atlas and what went on on his home planet. Also I really liked how Ms. West tackled the insta-love this time. Both H & H were questioning how this could happen which I appreciated. Even though you have to suspend your disbelief to enjoy this paranormal story the questioning of the insta-love made it more believable. I was really enjoying the story until the very end. Yes there is a HEA however the ending was abrupt and like another reviewer I too was trying to flip to the next page thinking there was more. Also at the very end one of the throw away lines on how she welcomes home Atlas was just plain crude and not the typical treatment that Ms. West usually gives a sex scene which really wasn't a scene but a statement. The story was left opened ended enough that other stories could be spawned from this one. I give this story 3.5 stars since there are no half stars I rounded up. I received an ARC for a honest and unbiased review.

Thought this book was very slow paced. Only half a book. Very disappointed in the ending. Would not recommend to other readers. Peeved that I paid for it. I wouldn't even give this one star, but that's the lowest option available.

Too many errors

I have only read the first 600 pages of this 760 page book. Although it has a lot of good information and is well organized, there is a remarkable amount of errors in every chapter. In addition to many grammatical errors, I find errors that actually mix up the information and lead you to learn things incorrectly if you don't catch the error. Sometimes the text information doesn't match the information in the illustrations. I find some of the illustrations more difficult to interpret than they really should be. Also, do not depend on the answers to the end of chapter multiple choice questions. Many of the answers given in the appendix are wrong. The key concepts given at the end of each section are sometimes new concepts and not something you encounter when reading the section.
I am frustrated that a book can be sold for so much when it was so carelessly thrown together.

Solid textbook; very dry

There's not a whole lot to say about this book; it does a fine job as a molecular biology textbook for undergraduates. Once you progress past the undergraduate level, this is only helpful as a reference and won't do much good for getting experiments underway. The writing style is dry and getting much out of it depends on your ability to memorize.

It's not a bad book, it just suffers from the same flaws as most textbooks.

Dense read

I had this book for a course in Molecular Biology. Section titles read like titles of research papers. Important information is crammed into long, dense blocks of text and is not marked for easy notice. The art is rather nice, but it barely makes up for the book's overall lack of readability.

About the Author
Malcolm Bradbury was a well-known novelist, critic and academic. He co-founded the famous creative writing department at the University of East Anglia, whose students have included Ian McEwan and Kazuo Ishiguro. His novels are Eating People is Wrong (1959); Stepping Westward (1965); The History Man (1975), which won the Royal Society of Literature Heinemann Prize; Rates of Exchange (1983), which was shortlisted for the Booker Prize; Cuts (1987); Doctor Criminale (1992); and To the Hermitage (2000). He wrote several works of non-fiction, humour and satire, including Who Do You Think You Are? (1976), All Dressed Up and Nowhere to Go (1982) and Why Come to Slaka? (1991). He was an active journalist and a leading television writer, responsible for the adaptations of Porterhouse Blue, Cold Comfort Farm and many TV plays and episodes of Inspector Morse, A Touch of Frost, Kavanagh QC and Dalziel and Pascoe. He was awarded a knighthood in 2000 for services to literature and died later the same year.

Husband and wife radical poseurs wreak havoc in British academia during the '60s and '70s in this satirical novel first published in 1975. Novelist, critic, television dramatist and part-time professor Bradbury won the Royal Society of Literature's Heinemann Prize for it and adapted it into a TV series. On audiotape, narrator Paul Shelley gives it fine treatment, underplaying the humor and nicely vivifying the characters. Despite all the references to the European left, anyone trafficking among the American liberal intelligentsia of the period will recognize the symptoms and get a chuckle out of them. Middle-Class Marxist

Bradbury exposes academic socialism by measuring it with its own values and dialectic. Howard Kirk, self-proclaimed revolutionary, is ridden to the core with the middle class values he campaigns against. The "History Man" of the title, he strives to avoid all change in his life despite his progressive stance. "The History Man" is biting satire of British university life, sparing no one, staff and students alike. The book is very funny, but there is nobody to like - just as the characters don't care what happens to each other, it is hard to care what happens to them. The humour is vicious, and if you've ever been part of an institution you won't stop laughing.

This is the best Bradbury book I have read so far (after Doctor Criminale and Eating People is Wrong). The target of his satire is the class of 1970s academics preaching radical action while ensconced rather happily in their bourgeois lifestyles. These are people who justify their adherence to fickle fashions and engagement in superficial pleasures with the need to remain in step with fast-changing history, while destroying their ideological opponents who happen to speak out against this "revolution" of self-ingratiation. For example, while spreading the gospel of radical equality and the end of exploitation, Professor Kirk's wife keeps a number of unpaid female student "servants" to help her run her rather ordinary middle-class household. Similarly, Kirk himself is quite adamant to guard his privacy while announcing that there is no such thing, and use administrative procedures of the "oppressive regime" to dispense with uncomfortable foes.

Of course, now I sound as though this is an awfully heavy book, but in reality it's a light satire, full of sarcasm and irony which aren't all that hard to spot, and may even apply to contemporary academics. After all, it is an isolated, guild-like hierarchy of self-proclaimed revolutionaries, whose most radical action often extends no further than an occasional wine-and-cheese "happening," while the gullible armies of undergraduates are quite happy to enact the sometimes absurd theories--in the name of some sort of misguided self-realization, social acceptance, or maybe a euphoric high.

Except that Kirk was not merely a deluded ideologue; instead, he acted like a fully conscious manipulator for the achievement of his own little projects of social engineering which for him, more often than not, culminated in an orgasm.

The Best Campus Novel

The campus novel, written both by British and American writers, became a recognized subgenre in the last 50 years. Most of these books, produced by writers with academic appointments, are not very interesting. This book, however, is a real exception. This is simply the best campus novel and a devastating sendup of academic pretense and radical chic. In many ways, this book is also the best novel of the 60s as well. A key feature of this book is that Bradbury's characters are not caricatures; he is very careful to mix real elements of sympathy with his satire.

This book is aimed at the working professional engineer rather than the novice. The ideal audience would include engineers who have been working in other fields and are now considering a career in automotive, or engineers who are already in one particular automotive electronics specialty but wishing to explore other subsystems. Accordingly, this book provides a comprehensive overview of every vehicle subsystem. It also goes beyond the theoretical to actual case studies of specific vehicles. The city's topography, both natural and built, very often plays a significant role in its myths. By focusing on Greek literature ranging from the oral epics to the travel writing of the Roman Empire, this book explores the relationship between the city's spaces as they were represented in the Greek literary tradition and the physical realities of a developing city that had been continuously inhabited since at least the second millennium BC. Spurred on especially by the city's catastrophic sack by Alexander the Great in 335 BC, the urban topography of Thebes came more and more to reflect the literary, even fictional, constructions of its mythic past.

About the Author
Daniel W. Berman is Associate Professor of Greek and Roman Classics at Temple University, Philadelphia. He has published articles on Aeschylus, the city of Thebes, the Dirce spring, the Boeotian poetess Corinna, and related subjects. His first monograph, Myth and Culture in Aeschylus' Seven against Thebes, was published in 2007, and he is the translator from French of a book by Claude Calame, Myth and History in Ancient Greece: The Symbolic Creation of a Colony (2003).
