Inspirational and an easy read!

I wasn't quite sure what to expect when I received this book in the mail. But I was intrigued by the description on the back cover. So I decided to order it through Amazon Vine. I'm really glad I did. This little book is a very fast read.

The author has fallen into a deep depression and begins to question his life. He is no longer sure if he even wants to go on living. Planning a suicide in his mind triggers a time of intense soul-searching and introspection. He looks back over the course of his life and zeros on on the things that really matter. The stories in this book are intimate. Most of them are about close friends, family and other personal experiences. The author finally realizes that it's the people in our lives who truly matter most. Some of them may only be in our lives for a short time, but can leave a long-lasting impact on the heart and life. The author also comes to believe that it's not status, money, or possessions that lead to lasting happiness. It is possible to have all these things and still be miserable. This book is chocked full of practical wisdom and is peppered with quotes from famous people through out. I could definitely relate to a lot of what the author shared and struggled with. The struggles the author discusses in this book are universal to all people. This is a very thought-provoking book and it will show you how to be grateful for the little things in life. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is going through a difficult time or has given up hope. Life is too short to waste what little time we have on things that ultimately won't matter. Ultimately, this is a book of hope.

Not the last day but a fresh start

I was very interested in reading this book. I have never heard of the author but the subject matter piqued my interest. I think many people have found themselves at one point and time thinking their life would be better if they just ended it. I think we all suffer from depression at one point in time such as the author has. But what one chooses to do with life when faced with those thoughts is up to each of us. Jim Moret was brave enough to write about his experiences and how he dealt with them. I think you have to be connected with such issues and I found it very inspiring rather than depressing.

I was very drawn to this book and could not put it down. From reading it you would think the author has everything one could want in his life -- a great job, life, family, home, you name it. From the outside looking in, people probably did not think there were any problems. However that changed. He lets you know that from the inside looking out his life was not going the way he wanted it to. He had plans to end his life. It was not just a thought he had once but battled with for some time. Instead of asking himself what if he had never lived he asked himself what if he had one day left to life? With that he took an appreciation for life and everything around it.

While the author shares his life with you in a way you can actually visualize it, I felt the same thoughts and emotions at times he had running through his mind. Rather than ending his life and deciding to actually live it he still faced and dealt with a lot of problems. But in the end he found different ways to deal with the life he was given. If you ever felt life was not worth living, please pick this up. Truly a very brave man!

Great way to learn!

I recently wanted to brush up and improve on the conversational Spanish I learned in junior high school (way back in the Dark Ages of the 1960's.) This is a really easy and interesting way to do that, even if you've never had any Spanish instruction before. You can download the entire text (complete with audio) from the CD that comes with the book and follow along through each lesson as it's read to you by native speakers. The interactive format allows you to highlight passages, bookmark your location for the next time, easily page through the text, and have the audio on or off at your choosing.

I've found that following along with the text as it's being read to me helps me stay focused, since I tend to be a "skimmer" sometimes. Hearing the speakers correctly pronounce the Spanish words is a major plus also. And there is always the book itself to refer to when you can't be on the computer. All in all a good approach to learning a foreign language. Mr. Fernandez would be proud.....

Awesome book, but accompanying CD is ...

This is a wonderful book for learners who are just starting to study Spanish. I wish I knew about this book four years ago when I became interested in learning spanish for the first time. I probably would have become fluent in Spanish by now!
What I enjoy most is the CD-ROM that comes with the book, except that it is a bit fast. It would have been good if the narrators spoke moderately slower than normal spanish conversational speed. It would also have been a good idea to include one dialogue in each chapter, first spoken in normal conversational speed, then repeated more slowly.
I am still enjoying the book!

I bought this books in the hope of learning spanish - a language I am fascinated with. It is a good book as a guidance, to take you step by step through the language BUT it definitely needs extras. Don't rely just on this book, you will be lost. you need to buy a dictionary and a few other grammar and pronoun etch books to accompany it. Once you do, it is a very good guide and helpful enough.

A lifetime's worth of therapy for < 1/2 the price of one session!!!

Gently yet forcefully Vito Mucci pushes up against the way we've always tried to make ourselves better people. A challenge to grow your consciousness in every chapter. An eye opening revelation on each page. Vito's approach to helping us understand the reasons we've not be able to actually achieve the concept of being happy in our skin allows us to not be angry (for long, anyway) that we've been lied to by gurus, church, state and our parents.

With a vocabulary all its own, CFC101 has made a more pleasant trip of my journey into WHO I AM.
I've read Tolle, Chopra, Walsh, Katie and Dyer. All bestow pearls of wisdom on what happiness is. Vito shows you where and how to find it.
Vito's version of Self-Help may just make him this generation's Joseph Campbell.

Vito Mucci’s COFFEE FOR CONSCIOUSNESS makes you think. Not a book to be consumed in one sitting, but to wait on your bed stand and opened any time you want to peer into an honest mind.

Go to any page, there’ll be something to ponder: “we can access to every perspective we’ve ever been part of. That’s the evolution of consciousness.” (P. 105)

Ever wonder why you get angry for no reason, or for a mistaken assumption, slights real or imagined? “. . . we naturally assume our emotional reactions are based on reality. This is an assumption I like to call The Raccoon Trap.” (P. 151)

A fully developed discourse on the nature of consciousness for the public education, Coffee for Consciousness 101 is more than just a self-help book. It is a living, breathing dissertation on how to live a full life as well as the next evolutionary step for humanity as a species. I've always felt drawn to Vito's work. Pursuing concepts to describe about consciousness alongside healing practices has been my passion. I can say that this book illuminates those areas that I've been striving to reach, and as its focus is on our daily lives, it is the most real-life applicable book that I have ever read.

To Dr. Paul Silvia, author of How to Write a Lot: A Practical Guide to Productive Academic Writing, I want to say: Ouch, that was a real slap in the face, but thank you.

A few days ago, I was gladly notified of the acceptance of my proposal to present at a graduate student research conference this fall. Considering the grave importance of producing the most satisfactory piece of academic writing as my first official foray into the academia, I wanted to be as well prepared as possible. A firm advocate of the Chinese idiom -- sharpening your axe before cutting the firewood is never a waste of time -- and a long-time beneficiary of a myriad of how-to books, I picked Dr. Silvia's How to Write a Lot as one of my reference materials.

This book starts out with bona fide face slapping -- piercing, painfully accurate diagnosis and demystification of the four most prevailing "specious barriers" to writing a lot. And I scored 3 out of 4. Yes, I am the one who constantly complains about not being able to find time to write yet never miss my favorite TV show. "Binge writers are also binge readers and binge statisticians." Bingo! You often say "I'm waiting until I feel like it." How do you know that?!

For me, holding the misconception of creativity being a flash of inspiration out of nowhere is the most lethal of all. Flash of light, bolt of lightening, and alignment of stars have rarely happened, yet the sheer scarcity of their occurrences ironically further feeds my illusion. Dr. Silvia makes all attempts -- scientific, psychological, and motivational -- to hammer home to his readers the simple point that "writing breeds good ideas for writing." Inspiration comes through diligent scheduling, not desultory daydreaming.

Another life-altering wake up call for me is the principle of "write first, revise later." I was indeed in a misguided quest for the perfect first draft throughout graduate school. It would take me forever to write down a perfect first sentence before I can move on to the next one. It is the self-inflicting malpractice of writing that makes writing more excruciating that it already is. Hence the procrastination. Hence the analysis paralysis.

Besides the heart-pumping motivation and trenchant guidance on how to implement a writing schedule, this book also provides insights on submission and resubmission of academic journals, writing a book, and other aspects of academic writing any scholar will encounter in their professional life. I look forward to the day when I revisit this book for specific advice on those parts, but for now, I will just enjoy the zen of scheduled writing with the magical weapon of the prolific Anthony Thrllope -- "a piece of cobbler's wax on my chair."

So simple yet infinitely helpful (lifesaver!)

This is a simple and relatively short book, because it does not need to be long. I've struggled for years, trying to figure out why I can't make writing flow more easily and why I always end up pushed against deadlines needing entire days or weekends or weeks to finish writing something I could have (and should have) finished earlier. Even if you aren't sure why you don't write the way you wish you could, this book can probably help you. Many thanks to the author.

This slim volume has lots of good advice for academics who want to write more. In a concise and humorous manner, author Paul Silvia manages to give practical advice that (if followed) is guaranteed to help readers write more.
Mr. Silvia begins by debunking all of the excuses that people have for not writing:

• There's not enough time
• I need to read more articles before I begin
• I need a new computer, a better printer, etc.
• I'm waiting for inspiration

He tells us that the only way to ensure that you write more is to write according to a schedule, such as two hours every morning. He then discusses tools to help writers set goals, set priorities, and monitor progress. He denies the existence of writer's block for academic writers: "Writer's block is nothing more than the behavior of not writing" (p. 46).

Mr. Silvia goes on to suggest setting up a writers' group and describes his experiences with such a group at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where he works. In subsequent chapters he tackles writing style and the art of writing journal articles and books. His discussions on handling reviews and rejection are especially helpful. He concludes by stressing that you don't need special qualities to write; you just need to keep
to your writing schedule. If you do that, you're guaranteed to write more.
