Brain Snacks a.k.a. "Mental Munchies"

In the interest of full disclosure, I must admit that I know Karl Albrecht. We met once a few years ago and we also attended a little gathering at a friend and colleague’s home. I have known of Karl Albrecht for many years, and I have always had the utmost professional respect for him and his work. Now, all that has changed. Now, I really like and admire him!!

Brain Snacks is one of the funniest and most interesting books I’ve come across in years. I had barely started reading it when I began laughing so hard that my wife gave me a disapproving look. I kept reading. One of the many things I like about Brain Snacks is that there is no plot to figure out; no story line to follow; no lengthy passages. You can pick it up, read a little bit and put it down – or, you can keep reading. You can jump around as your mood dictates and you won’t lose track of a thing. Quite simply, it is a book chock full of “mental munchies.” There are some recurring categories: Nitwitticisms, Favorite Lame Jokes, Partly Baked Ideas (PBI) and Famous Bad Calls to name some. But, in the end, Brain Snacks is exactly what Karl says it is: “Fast Food for Your Mind.”

At 235 pages, with the Credits and Introduction at the end instead of up front, you would have a hard time finding a better way of entertaining yourself on an as-you-feel-like-it basis and, maybe just maybe, also educating yourself a little bit in the process. At $15.95, it’s a darn good buy.

Delightfully hilarious, yet astute commentary on modern life

I met Dr. Karl Albrecht at a recent conference on book publishing. In one of life's serendipitous moments, I found that we share similar career experiences as a physicist, business owner, military officer, and strategic thinker. What I discovered in Karl is a polymath with an extraordinary range of interests. His insights are steeped in a refined, often irreverent, sense of humor - no one is spared his critical eye, shrewd mind, and rapier wit.

Looking for a light read while flying overseas, I brought a copy of Brain Snacks that Karl had given me. It features a potpourri of snarky humor in the best British tradition of The Economist and Monty Python. And Karl delivered in spades - the book is liberally sprinkled with pop culture, tongue-in-cheek commentaries, amusing historical notes, and optimistic prognostications. His "snack-sized" bites tickled my ribs so often that the flight attendant asked why I was chuckling!

Yet Brain Snacks is more than simply a relaxing read; at its core it is an astute commentary on modern life. A recipient of Mensa's lifetime achievement award, Karl shares many perceptive observations on people, relationships, technology, and society at large. More importantly, he challenges us to think and use our intelligence, qualities which are in short supply today.

Well-edited, this book is a quality read (mine is full of dog-eared pages and notes). For those wanting to slap their knee while acquiring sage pearls of wisdom on how to succeed, this is the right book for you.

A great read filled with great thoughts

Great book. Absolutely great. Good for that quick, but deeply thoughtful, read. Karl Albrecht has a lot to ponder and write about on a wide range of topics: everything from self-help advice (which I appreciated personally) to what will happen when we colonize the moon (which was both thought provoking and alarming). The book is structured into bite size segments that allow you to keep reading, skip around, or put the book down to ponder what you have just read. Perhaps the funniest part is the fact that the forward is at the end of the book ... largely to prove how lame most author forwards are. If you like to think about philosophy, science, topical issues, and divert your attention to sheer amusing nonsense, get this one. It will make you laugh, make you cry, and make you think.

If you've ever wondered what crashed into the desert near Roswell, New Mexico, in 1947, this book will give you some startling answers. While the first version was published in hardcover in 1997, Corso provides new evidence for the presence of alien intruders in this pocket paperback edition. Whether or not you believe his contention, the sheer weight of governmental sources and documentation presented by the former Army intelligence officer is not easily dismissed. Once you understand the historical context (in the midst of the Cold War soon after World War II, with Orson Welles having recently inspired panic in citizens with his fictional War of the Worlds radio broadcast), the military deciding to cover up a real-life alien ship becomes more credible. As the 50th anniversary approaches of the crash of a so-called extraterrestrial craft near Roswell, New Mexico, the UFO conspiracy theory is getting more attention. These latest books approach Roswell from different perspectives but identical agendas. Hesemann and Mantle are young UFO researchers who have visited Roswell and spent several years collecting documents and eyewitness testimony from people reputedly involved in either the crash recovery or its cover-up. (Most of the eyewitnesses turn out not to be.) The authors trade off chapters, with Hesemann using his anthropologist's training not only to tie the Roswell crash to Native American legends but to claim that Egyptian hieroglyphics and the Greek alphabet are directly related to the characters said to have adorned the crashed spacecraft's exterior. Corso, a career military intelligence officer, claims to have managed myriad research projects throughout the 1950s connected to recovery of the Roswell craft. Like Hesemann and Mantle, he asserts that the Cold War was a cover to develop "alien technology" that superpowers USA and USSR could not only use against the other but against the threat of extraterrestrial invasion. The most memorable passage in either book, however, is Hesemann and Mantle's suggestion that President Clinton induced the warring parties to make peace in the Bosnian war only by showing them proof of that alien menace. For public libraries convinced that pro-UFO books are needed for balance, the Hesemann and Mantle may be appropriate. Thought Provoking, Intriguing and a great read for even the biggest skeptics

I myself went into this book with a pretty open mind. While I wasn't completely convinced in the existence, I found it hard to believe that so many reports would be out there and nothing credible every taking place.

This book went well beyond my expectations. The amount of depth, dates, locations, and documents included in this book are second to none. Col. Corso reached back to many of his contacts, and much of the information is well documented. It paints a wonderful picture from the late 1940's up through the early '80s. The lengths that everyone went to for the cover up are truly fascinating.

I am a huge technology nerd, and I was always curious to how so much technology was produced in such a short time period. From the Night Vision, to printed circuit boards, to processors in computers, to kevlar vests; all this technology kind of came out of no where in a very quick time. Col. Corso breaks down each one of the above mentioned topics in multiple sections and explains the R&D side all the way up to how contracts were given out and how they kept it under wraps. He mentions many documents that can be found all over the Internet. There is no way to dispute the moments he refers to as having taken place at those locations. That is all clearly documented.

In the end, it certainly had a ton of great information. I decided to read it again just to see if I missed any good research points. It can be kind of dry, and more toward a text book type read at moments. This is necessary to show the factual side and everything that took place through the time period and the push back from some gov agencies and other governments. I read a few books a week, but this one is a must read, even if you are not that interested in aliens, or EBE's as Colonel Corso refers to them.

I just hopped on the alien bandwagon and what a book to start with. To begin with, colonels are serious people. They take their entire career to make the rank and are one step below general. So for Col Corso to come forward and risk his legacy and ridicule from his peers is what made me want to read the book. I'm about 2/3 of the way through and am astonished by what I'm reading. If 1/10 of what he's purporting to be true really is true, we've been lied to by our government on a galactic scale (pun intended). I think the scheme of the government to play UP the conspiracy theories and keep it out in the open is what has kept it off the real radar of the American people. From technological advances from reverse engineered alien technology to biological research. its a fascinating read. To be honest I'm not sure the American people a ready for the real truth but if what the colonel suggests is true, its only a matter of time before we have no choice but to believe.

A Very Good Modified Limited Hangout

Reading this book is rather like peeling away the layers of an onion. No matter how many layers one removes, many more remain. It is like walking the corridors of a great and terrible labyrinth. No matter which way one turns or which course one takes, countless others beckon.

Even to begin to absorb the enormous implications of this book requires multiple readings, as well as reading between the lines. Corso does not, and probably could not, tell all. Can anyone, even the wisest and most intelligent among us, comprehend the momentous implications of his revelations on the UFO phenomenon and its technological spinoffs? The latter are enough to challenge even the finest minds with a steady stream of questions with which the human race shall be struggling for centuries to come.

One must bear in mind also that the perspectives of every writer of history are limited. There are events in this book which imply much deeper politics which Corso only touches the surface of (especially those involving JFK and LBJ).

The reasons that I only gave the book 4 stars out of 5 are two. First, because the book has no index, rendering it less useful than it otherwise would have been. This necessitated the insertion of many notations in the margins. Perhaps this fact was a cloud with a silver lining, since the creations of such notes meant reviewing and increasing my understand of the material in a way that would not have occurred had I had the luxury of an index.

The second is political. Corso has apparently designated a number of areas of science and technology off limits to further revelations to the public until an undisclosed time in the future (perhaps never).

In sum, I believe that the technological marvels as well as the secret political/social implications of the UFO phenomenon actually go beyond, perhaps far beyond what he has revealed here. But how much can one mortal mind absorb in a single lifetime? Not for nothing was Majestic 12 formed!

One is reminded of the comments of a dying Captain Nemo at the end of Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, as spoken by actor James Mason (the Disney film version): "But there is hope for the future. When the world is ready for a new and better life, all this will some day come to pass in God's good time."

I needed this book for so long

Normally I leave review only when it is bad, probably like most regular people, because I get lazy and forget to write one, when it is a good one. But this time I almost didn't have to force myself to take time and write this.
I gave 5 stars, although the book does have some flaws.
Some of the stories are hard to understand, may be it is due to me being a foreigner, or english being my second language, or the language it is written in is not simple enough for everybody to understand, or some other reasons, but I do listen to every CD of this book few times to get the most out of it.
As for pros, there are many of those for me.
I have learnt about myself, understood myself and got a wide perspective on what is going on in my life more in two days of listening to the book, than I did in the last one and half years talking to people around me, my mom, and doing research on the internet.
Ability to word the problem, to give it a name, and realization of the fact that I am not alone gave me a jump start to my healing and growing into someone who I was meant to be all along. I don't know yet who and where I will be, but now I know what I need to work towards to and this new goal gives me peace and brings back my old me, a persistent, intelligent and strong person, a child of God.
I regret, I havent' gotten this CD at least 6 months ago, when I was broken into smallest pieces ever, when emotionally and mentally I was lower than the dust under my feet. But there is a reason for everything. I hope later in life this experience will become a valuable one for me.
Anyways, you have to be ready for this book. Going back to the cons, it is not written (CD in my case) in a way, where everything said in it just goes straight to your brain. But I do recommend it to people, who is lost in life, financially, emotionally, mentally or just feel stuck in somewhere he does not belong.

I really enjoyed this book and it really helped me through some tough times. I had also read Pursuit of Happyness a while back and his writing style is no-holds-barred honest and of so much depth. My favorite takeaway from this book (there were many!) was his explanation on the fact that the Calvary ain't coming. And that's a beautiful thing to realize. Thanks Chris!! Love your books

Chris Gardner's story is nothing but inspirational and practical. It's always good to have a model, mentor, coach in this key area of life. I think this book does that wonderfully well. You can devour it in a weekend. You'll be glad you did.

This book made my boys very eager for a real life snowy day!

We discovered Kipper by way of the Nick Jr. TV show, and were very glad to find how very well done the Kipper books are. This simple but very pleasing tale of Kipper and Tiger enjoying the snow really is a popular one in our house. They love hearing about the dogs rolling down the hill, Tiger being sure the snow will be gone soon, and the dogs making their version of snow animals. Recently when we got a good sized snow, both of my boys acted out a lot of what they had heard in this book in the real snow!

A Great Children's Book for All Seasons, Not Just Winter

In this fun and cheery book, Kipper awakens to find that it has snowed outside. Grabbing his scarf, he heads outside to explore the new-fallen snow. Soon, he's making tracks and snow dogs all across the garden. He ventures to Big Hill, where he finds his friend Tiger. Tiger is dressed in silly clothes that the snow sticks to. Kipper shows his snow dog game to Tiger, but Tiger is unable to get up, and soon he's rolling head over heels down the hill. Instead of being scared, Tiger enjoys this activity very much. Tiger and Kipper spend the rest of their day rolling down the hill, and they build a huge snow dog at the bottom.

This is an excellent book for preschool children. The story is very fun, and the pictures are bright and colorful. My children are big fans of the Kipper television show, and this is one of their favorite books to hear when going to bed. I highly recommend this fun book. Your children will enjoy watching Tiger and Kipper play in the snow.

I enjoyed this book very much. This book reminded me of all the fun times my friends and I had when we were younger. I liked this book also, because of the things that Kipper, and Tiger do together, they make their own fun. Even though Tiger dos not like the silly woolly snow suit, they make it funny. I liked when they were rolling down the hill, then how they used all the snow to make a dog.
Kipper and Tiger will always find ways to have fun. This great variety of books as well as the television series, and movies that have been made, Kipper is vey popular. I would recommend this book for children ages 2-8, because I think anyone can enjoy this book.

Best Delta Book on C# 2.0 Out There

So, You are a seasoned C# 1.x developer very much looking forward to learn the lean mean C# 2.0, great. But as much as you want to learn the language enhancements, you despise the fact that any book you pick seems to start teaching you the old things over and over again; all the features you already knew (or should know); the for loop, the if statement and therefore you'd have to skip several hundred pages to get to learn a new feature...that is painful.

Like you, I was looking for a book which will teach me delta, i.e. the differences and enhancements to the new language and not the features which I already know as a C# developer for several years. Written with this upgrade-only concept in mind, seasoned author Jesse Liberty's "Visual C# 2005" came to the rescue. As series creator Bret McLaughlin says "People don't have time (or the income) to read through 600 page books, often learning 200 things of which only about 4 apply to their current job."

I found this to be a very true statement. From very begining, this book is targeted towards explaining generics, iterators, anonymous methods, partial types, static classes,, nullable types, limiting access to properties, delegate covariance, contra-variance, enumerators etc; things you'd want to learn as these are new to C# 2.0. Next chapter talks about IDE enhancements (not necessarily a language feature but it helps), visualizers, refactoring and debugging tools provided with Visual studio.NET 2005. It gets better from here; Web apps, data driven forms, asynchronous tasks, one click deployment...you name it. In a little over 200 pages, it is a concise upgrade guide to C# 2.0 and Visual Studio.NET 2005 enhancements to support this update.

Developer's notebook also talks about security controls, personalization, authentication, master pages, themes and other ASP.NET enhancements you'd find ubiquitous in all ASP.NET 2.0 books, without the fluff. I made myself sound almost like the marketing person for O'Reilly but the truth is, I found this book really exciting. As Bret further said "the often-frantic scribbling and notes that a true-blue alpha geek mentally makes when working with a new language, API or project. I've also just attended Juval Lowy's workshop on Visual C# 2.0 in DevConnections 2005 conference held in Las Vegas. Along with conference notes handout, I used Developer's Notebook as a follow up reference. Example labs like CreateATypeSafeList, GenericEnumeration, ImplementingGenericInterfaces were simillar to those among the demos performed. Also, the author, Jesse Liberty is a Microsoft .NET MVP and author of Programming C#, Programming VB 2005, Programming ASP.NET, Programming .Net Windows Applications and various other books which explains why the book is so cohesive and contemporary.

Like any other book, it has some short comings too. For instance the level of detail at certain topics but the link section covers references if you are interested in learning more about a specific subject. I think this comes hand to hand with being to-the-point and concise.

If you are not an existing C# developer or want to learn old language features over again, this book is NOT for you. However, if you want to adapt to the new awesome features of C# 2.0 without further ado, there is only one thing to do, add to cart.

Excellent Primer for C# 2.0

For those of you who have been programming in C# since its release a few years ago, you recognize an update for the language was becoming overdue. Microsoft has delivered by Visual C# 2005 which will be released with the upcoming Visual Studio 2005. In "Visual C# 2005 - A Developer's Notebook" the author has done a wonderful job of taking you through the new features of the language and showing you "what you need to know to get it done" about this new release.

Before you purchase this book, realize it is not a C# primer nor beginner's guide. This book was written for those who already are familiar and use C#. A lot of what the author goes into will make no sense unless you already have a firm understanding of the language and are familiar with its constructs.

For those of you who are familiar with the language, you are in for a terrific reference guide to the new features. The author has taken each new feature, such as Accessing Objects in the Global Namespace, and tells you how you do it programatically (with source code), explains what you just did, and gives an explanation about other uses or "gotchas" that might result by using this feature. To conclude, he gives a reference to another source so that if you want to learn more, or go farther in-depth, you can easily find out more -- most often by pointing back to the MSDN developer library.

Often, when there is a point the author wishes to bring you attention to, he uses the sidebar to draw your attention. A quick blurb about a special syntax or argument that could shed a lot of light on some of the new concepts.

Overall, a great companion to the upcoming Visual Studio 2005 C# release. If you are an experienced C# programmer and want to know what is ahead -- this would be well worth adding to your bookshelf.

Interesting collection of C# nuggets and wisdom

I like the format of this book. The writing is clear and is certainly at a level that is appropriate for intermediate or advanced users. The problem that I have with the book is the same on I have with most of the notebook books. They are great collections of random things. But how does that fit in with a programmers workflow when they are looking for solutions. Sure, it's excellent reading the first time through to get some advanced concepts down. But what about the reference value later?

That being said. There is some very cool stuff in this book. A lot of helpful information on XML, advanced forms issues, and advanced ASP.NET stuff. So have a look through the table of contents and see if there is anything that catches your eye, and buy on that basis.

About the Author
C. Henry Edwards is emeritus professor of mathematics at the University of Georgia. He earned his Ph.D. at the University of Tennessee in 1960, and recently retired after 40 years of classroom teaching (including calculus or differential equations almost every term) at the universities of Tennessee, Wisconsin, and Georgia, with a brief interlude at the Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton) as an Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellow. He has received numerous teaching awards, including the University of Georgia's honoratus medal in 1983 (for sustained excellence in honors teaching), its Josiah Meigs award in 1991 (the institution's highest award for teaching), and the 1997 statewide Georgia Regents award for research university faculty teaching excellence. His scholarly career has ranged from research and dissertation direction in topology to the history of mathematics to computing and technology in the teaching and applications of mathematics. In addition to being author or co-author of calculus, advanced calculus, linear algebra, and differential equations textbooks, he is well-known to calculus instructors as author of The Historical Development of the Calculus (Springer-Verlag, 1979). During the 1990s he served as a principal investigator on three NSF-supported projects: (1) A school mathematics project including Maple for beginning algebra students, (2) A Calculus-with-Mathematica program, and (3) A MATLAB-based computer lab project for numerical analysis and differential equations students. David E. Penney, University of Georgia, completed his Ph.D. at Tulane University in 1965 (under the direction of Prof. L. Bruce Treybig) while teaching at the University of New Orleans. Earlier he had worked in experimental biophysics at Tulane University and the Veteran's Administration Hospital in New Orleans under the direction of Robert Dixon McAfee, where Dr. McAfee's research team's primary focus was on the active transport of sodium ions by biological membranes. Penney's primary contribution here was the development of a mathematical model (using simultaneous ordinary differential equations) for the metabolic phenomena regulating such transport, with potential future applications in kidney physiology, management of hypertension, and treatment of congestive heart failure. He also designed and constructed servomechanisms for the accurate monitoring of ion transport, a phenomenon involving the measurement of potentials in microvolts at impedances of millions of megohms. Penney began teaching calculus at Tulane in 1957 and taught that course almost every term with enthusiasm and distinction until his retirement at the end of the last millennium. During his tenure at the University of Georgia he received numerous University-wide teaching awards as well as directing several doctoral dissertations and seven undergraduate research projects. He is the author of research papers in number theory and topology and is the author or co-author of textbooks on calculus, computer programming, differential equations, linear algebra, and liberal arts mathematics.

Average, Could use more worked examples

Luckily I had a very good professor for this class, so I didn't need to depend on the text as much as I might have to in other classes. As an engineering student, I don't ignore theory, but I do need a few more worked examples for the text to be really useful for me. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate rigor and I do like mathematics for its own sake, but, I could have used a little more emphasis on applications than this text provided.

A good differential equations textbook

I think the strength of this textbook is the amount of material it encompasses: this book is used in two separate courses in my school--introduction to DE and engineering analysis. I didn't appreciate the textbook so much until I completed my differential equations course and then looked back at the sections on mechanical vibrations to review for my physics course. I then realized that the explanations and derivations were extremely satisfying, much more than your average introductory physics text. Also, the emphasis on the qualitative aspects of DEs, such as slope fields and phase portraits, aid in the coneptual understanding of the otherwise rigorous computation aspects of the topic. My only complaint is that the proofs could've been done in a more understandable manner.

Just Plain Not Good

This book has several problems.
1. There are numerous typos in the text as well as in the solutions printed in the back of the book (and in the solutions manual). It can be very frustrating to puzzle over a problem for a long time only to find you were right and the book was wrong.
2. Several important techniques are only explained as short paragraphs in the exercise section (ie Euler Equation substitution, Reduction of Order, and others). You are left to try and figure out how to apply the vague instructions by looking at the solutions manual or asking someone else. I found this to be the biggest problem with the book.
3. The end of each example or concept is marked by a small red box in the margin of the page. These boxes are easy to miss so the distinction between example and theory, as well as between different aspects of the theory will become blurred unless you pay close attention to when the red boxes appear. Consequently results derived from theory and results derived from specific examples tend to blend together.
4. Often the authors add length to problems by providing the given values in non-SI units and the constants of nature in SI units. While this isn't a serious problem with the book, it would make the book needlessly annoying if you were using it for self study.
For the class that required this book I ended up checking out a different textbook on differential equations from the library to learn from. I only used this one for the questions we were assigned. If you have any choice in the matter I would recommend getting a different book.

How good is your eyesight?

This is a tome of a book, and its contents are initially very impressive, but it STILL contains many old and out of date details which have been pulled and photocopied from projects that are rather worn and ragged looking. Also, many of the drawings are not legible due to size and lineweight quality, and so you may have to resort to pulling out a magnifying glass to decipher the information.

In my opinion, a superior resource is "Interior Graphic Standards" by Kelsey Kruse and Maryrose McGowan. Or, at least, one should have both books but check the information in this one against the far more accurate volume by Kruse/McGowan.

Very helpful book

I bought this book in college because it was part of my required text for my degree in Interior design. I have been out of school for 4 years and I still keep it at my desk or nearby when I am doing drawings. I recommend this book to anyone who is in the design industry. The details and information in this book saves the designer from having to go through multiple books looking for specific details.

This is a a "must have" for anyone in the interior design industry. The best book since Architectural Graphic Standards for the Interior Design Profession. Very Specific and all inclusive, excellent details for just about every application.
Required purchase for my Interior Design Students to use through out their educational and professional careers.
