Passed the MOS Expert Exam-Highly recommended

I also agree-unless you're a study maniac, this cant be covered in one weekend. Before I started this book, I took an Excel Intermediate class, and that just started my appetite. Purchased the book, studied it for a few weeks, then after I was able to do the practice exams with no problems, I felt I was ready for the exam. I passed on the first try, and just about everything that is in the book, was on the exam...except for adding a button on the toolbar for a macro.
I also purchased the Word Step-by-Step, but I'm going back to the Word version of this book.

Good - but not in one weekend

This book proves to be the best virtually all-encompassing prep tool for The Excel 2002 Microsoft Office Specialist Exam. That being said, you won't do it in one weekend - as the hype fallaciously proclaims - unless you're one of two things - an Excel freak or ... settling for the Core cert.
I just passed the Expert Exam today. 45 minutes for 14 multi-part questions. You need a 780/1000. It's no cakewalk, so to speak, but then again, I am an Expert. The only areas on the Expert exam where you need to get more info that aren't covered in this book are: customizing macros, subtotal options within PivotTables, and custom number formats. This book has a practice file from the CD_ROM for each and every lesson in this book - very helpful. It's very well written and comes highly recommended - I mean, we're talking Barabara Clemens.

Very Good: but one tiny flaw

I purchased this book in order to prepare for the MOS certification exam. It is very detailed; instructions easy to follow. Although I am an experienced Excel user, it took me a few days to go through it and complete all the exercises.

I would recommend this book to anyone. I only give it a 4 stars rating because one of the files referred to in the book and necessary to complete an exercise was omitted from the CD Rom. However it may be downloaded from the publisher website.

Great business book.

Great business book. It gives a fascinating account of how the author's personal experiences as a grandmaster chess player apply to the world of business. The book is a testament to how the knowledge and experience gained in one area of human activity be transferred to and enrich a different field. The author, a successful startup CEO, received his business education at the chess board, and that's what makes his style of thinking very unique. If you are an MBA student or in your early years of the business career you will enjoy this book and view the corporate world from an unusual angle. The book refers to many well known examples from the lives of AOL, Microsoft and the like, but by far the most interesting case studies are from the author's own experiences as a CEO.

Entertaining and Insightful

This is one of those rare business books that is both entertaining to read and offers valuable insight into how companies make decisions in today's faster paced business environment, particularly in the high tech world. I enjoyed learning about the limitations of strategic thinking shared by great chess players and great business executives. I'd recommend this book to both seasoned business executives and younger business people. It will remind veteran decisionmakers how to focus on what's ahead of them and provide younger managers (particularly young entrepreneurs) with context for why business plans most often have to change. A fun look at business strategy from a very unique perspective.

Absolutely fantastic

This book was truly fascinating. The witty writing style, combined with an outstanding barrage of real-world business examples, combined with very concise and clear applicability in the everyday business, made for some of the best reading I've had in a long time. Simply great stuff.

My own business is at a crossroads, a very crucial and challenging time, and that's actually why I read the book. I'm trying to digest and to act with wisdom and this material is probably the largest factor in the plans, from a strategic and tactical standpoint. My only concern right now is how to move quickly since, after all, I'm "On the Clock!"

And, believe it or not, it's been years (ahem, decades) since I played chess but I'm actually planning on buying at least a cheap board ASAP, after reading the book! I'll call that a business expense, actually, and a bona fide one at that. The title is true: you do NOT need to be a chess player to get immense benefit from the book. But, the game of chess is very, very comparable and from a mind-conditioning standpoint, I think some chess is worth my time.

I met the author of this book in NYC and heard him speak. Twas great and I was looking forward to reading the book. Very, very glad I did.

About the Author

Howard S. Friedman is Distinguished Professor of Psychology at the University of California, Riverside (UCR). His research is focused on lifespan psychosocial predictors and mediators of health and longevity. Dr. Friedman is the recipient of the career award for "Outstanding Contributions to Health Psychology" from the American Psychological Association (Division 38) and winner of UCR's Distinguished Teaching Award.

Roxane Cohen Silver is Professor of Psychology and Social Behavior and Professor of Medicine at the University of California, Irvine (UCI). She studies how individuals cope with stressful life experiences, such as loss of a spouse or child, divorce, childhood sexual abuse, physical disability, natural disaster, and terrorism. Dr. Silver has been an advisor to the US Department of Homeland Security and has received UCI's Distinguished Faculty Lectureship Award for Teaching.
