An up-to-date look at the evolution of interest rate swaps and derivatives

Interest Rate Swaps and Derivatives bridges the gap between the theory of these instruments and their actual use in day-to-day life. This comprehensive guide covers the main "rates" products, including swaps, options (cap/floors, swaptions), CMS products, and Bermudan callables. It also covers the main valuation techniques for the exotics/structured-notes area, which remains one of the most challenging parts of the market.

  • Provides a balance of relevant theory and real-world trading instruments for rate swaps and swap derivatives
  • Uses simple settings and illustrations to reveal key results
  • Written by an experienced trader who has worked with swaps, options, and exotics

With this book, author Amir Sadr shares his valuable insights with practitioners in the field of interest rate derivatives-from traders and marketers to those in operations.

From the Inside Flap
Interest rate swaps and their derivatives have become an integral part of the fixed income market, but many of the pricing and risk management issues for these now mainstream products can only be learned on a trading floor. While there are many books on fixed income and interest rate derivatives, they generally suffer from being either too elementary and bond-centric, mentioning swaps in passing, or too technical and focused on exotics and the myriad implementation issues and algorithms used to tackle them.

Rather than focusing on exotics, Interest Rate Swaps and Their Derivatives thoroughly covers the mainstream products—swaps, flow options, Bermudans, semi-exotics—showing the common pricing techniques while also explaining how to generalize the concepts to more nuanced products.

Author Amir Sadr, experienced as a quant, trader, financial software developer, and academic in the fixed income field, begins by presenting plain-vanilla swaps as an extension of fixed rate bonds—revealing how techniques for pricing these instruments are a generalization of similar methods used for pricing bonds and repos, and for the most part involve the concepts of financing cost, discount factors, and projection of forward curves. He then moves on to cover the options markets for flow products, including options on futures, caps and floors, and European swaptions—with detailed attention to the actual trading practice of these products. Sadr explains how, as with any option product, the pricing and risk management of these requires dealing with volatility as the main risk factor—and he shows that one does not need to have a PhD in math to understand options. Sadr presents risk-neutral valuation as the fundamental pricing paradigm for derivatives, and illustrates the core idea of dynamic replication in a simple binomial setting. This unified framework is used to derive industry-standard Black formula for flow products, and is developed into short-rate and full term-structure models for more complex interest rate exotics including Bermudans.

For current or aspiring practitioners in interest rate products, Interest Rate Swaps and Their Derivatives provides a sound working knowledge and appreciation of the main features of these products and their pricing and risk management issues.

From the Back Cover
Praise for Interest Rate Swaps and Their Derivatives

"This is it! I have been looking for a practitioner's guide to interest rate derivatives for over ten years! Most 'new joiners' on Wall Street only gain this knowledge over years of apprenticeship with seasoned professionals. In his book, Amir Sadr explains not only the math behind the products, but the street lingo and, most importantly, the mechanics of everything from overnight repos to Bermudans."
—George Nunn, Head of Fixed Income Structuring, Americas, BNP Paribas

"Dr. Sadr has produced a single, comprehensive guide to the interest rate swap market. Bank dealers and corporate risk professionals already active in this market will find the book to be one of the best trading floor reference guides out there. Students who want the real-world insights of a seasoned professional will also discover Dr. Sadr's book to be an invaluable resource."
—Morris Sachs, Chief Risk Officer, 5:15 Capital

Great practical overview of derivatives market
By Peter Decrem
The book fills a great niche in between very simple overviews and the very mathematical oriented work. If you need to know things like day counts for different indices, CMS convexity adjustments and a general overview over the different measures used to price derivatives, the different interest rate models etc. this is the book to own.

An Excellent Guide to Swap Market
By Youngzheng Lang
Comparing with other books on swap subject, this book offer a good balance between clearness of the concepts and just enough technical details to handle the real world problem. Reading this books is like attending a seminar taught by senior quantitative trader, it really filled the gaps in my knowledge.

Required reading...
By David Kelly
There are loads of books on the theory behind derivatives pricing - this book is unique in that it identifies and clearly explains the important practical aspects of these markets, including the jargon and conventions. Even after 20 years in the industry, this book completed many gaps in my knowledge base. It fills an important gap between the Handbook of Fixed Income Securities and Options, Futures and Other Derivatives.

More of everything that I enjoyed from Sentinel
By Clayton S Towery
The story picks up right where Sentinel left off and, once again, it is a wild ride for the heroes. Mrs. Foley maintains her crisp and exciting writing style that offers just enough details to help you paint the scene without bogging the story down with unnecessary details. She also doesn't let up on the secrets and suspense. I recall at least one instance where I was so excited that I was barely able to turn the pages fast enough, and that was on my second time through the book.

My main complaint from the first book is that the reader didn't get the chance to really know the characters well enough before they are put in mortal danger. I don't feel that this is a problem at all in this second book. Instead, character motivations seem to be a much bigger driving force to the plot in this book and I really felt for them.

I wasn't blown away by this book the way I was by Sentinel, but that is mainly because I had higher expectations. I expected a well written, exciting story and that's exactly what I got. Now, when is book 3 coming out? Whenever it is, it isn't soon enough for me.

Difficult to put down
By Book Maven
I finished Arbiter in record time. I could hardly put it down.

I liked Arbiter even better than Sentinel. The pacing was faster, there was more action, the characters were developed further, there were some fun surprises, and there was more intrigue. At times, I wasn't sure which end was up. :) I was very concerned with a certain anti-Joshua comment, which gnawed at me throughout the book. My questions were answered at the end. It was refreshing to see how Jet and Darien matured, and I found myself chuckling at their humorous pokes at each other. They are getting a bit better with their reactions.

It certainly feels like there are only a meager handful of Followers at the end of Arbiter. I most certainly enjoy the powerful use of gifts and I would really like to see good triumph, not by the skin of its teeth, but by an overwhelming and unstoppable surge.

You have done a marvelous job, and I feel certain that Aeo will not leave any of his own stranded. I can't wait to read the third book of your trilogy.

The ending in this book sets up beautifully for the final book
By Becky
My foremost complaint about Arbiter is the difficulty in putting it down to engage in real life!

Arbiter picks up right where Sentinel left off, immediately diving in to Darien's decision and the consequences of it. The story maintains that fast pace throughout, all the way to the final page. There's intrigue, battles, fascinating backstories learnt, island adventures and delightful character development! The ending in this book sets up beautifully for the final book, Sage, and knowing Mrs. Foley, we won't be disappointed in that final book!

I can't recommend this series highly enough. Fast paced, dynamic characters, unexpected twists and turns, a gripping story line, and all packaged together in a way that is still clean and family friendly! As an adult, I am on the edge of my seat reading it, and at the same time, I am recommending this book left and write for friends I know that are as young as junior high. It is with great anticipation that I look forward to whatever she decides to write next!

The Image of the English Gentleman in Twentieth-Century Literature: Englishness and Nostalgia, by Christine Berberich

Studies of the English gentleman have tended to focus mainly on the nineteenth century, encouraging the implicit assumption that this influential literary trope has less resonance for twentieth-century literature and culture. Christine Berberich challenges this notion by showing that the English gentleman has proven to be a remarkably adaptable and relevant ideal that continues to influence not only literature but other forms of representation, including the media and advertising industries. Focusing on Siegfried Sassoon, Anthony Powell, Evelyn Waugh and Kazuo Ishiguro, whose presentations of the gentlemanly ideal are analysed in their specific cultural, historical, and sociological contexts, Berberich pays particular attention to the role of nostalgia and its relationship to 'Englishness'. Though 'Englishness' and by extension the English gentleman continue to be linked to depictions of England as the green and pleasant land of imagined bygone days, Berberich counterbalances this perception by showing that the figure of the English gentleman is the medium through which these authors and many of their contemporaries critique the shifting mores of contemporary society. Twentieth-century depictions of the gentleman thus have much to tell us about rapidly changing conceptions of national, class, and gender identity.

Review
'Lucid, persuasive, and highly accessible ...Christine Berberich's penetrating and sometimes controversial analyses show how deep-rooted the idea of the gentleman still is in English literature and culture'. Patrick Parrinder, University of Reading, UK 'Another excellent book on the subject ... there is a particularly delightful chapter on Siegfried Sassoon's First World War trilogy ... (Berberich) always has interesting and novel things to say on the subject. ' A.N. Wilson, The Daily Telegraph 'Berberich's critical analysis is based on sound evidence and thorough knowledge of her subject. As a survey of Sassoon and Powell in particular, this book gives a good grounding in the nuances of the social history that are so important to an understanding of any aspect of the English class system in literature.' The Times Literary Supplement 'In lucid and astute interpretations, Berberich foregrounds literary texts as repository of both stereotypical ideas of Englishness and commonalities inherent in the English character. Equally, the book has the merit of marrying structure and content, rigor and empathy, eloquence and systematicity. Its didactic and methodical character recommends it as a suitable coursework bibliography.' American, British and Canadian Studies '... whatever historical resonance may infuse the figure of the gentleman, Berberich makes a memorable and often brilliant case for its continuing vitality ... In fact, the single greatest merit of Berberich's study may lie in her ability to read the seemingly simple figure of the English gentleman in such an astute, imaginative, and many-sided manner, ultimately demonstrating... that the ideal of the gentleman "has not only fashioned men throughout the decades but has itself proven to be - in both meanings of the word - a fashionable ideal".' Modernism/Modernity 'Ultimately the strength of Berberich's book is in her treatment of the gentleman as he appears in the half century between the mid-1920s and the mid-1970s. Here she presents a compelling analysis of a lonely, institutionalized character, caught between the manners and morals of the past and the dictates of a new world order, and incapable of rationalising the crass self- centredness of the present with the codes of self- sacrifice and duty that have informed his making.' Don't Blame the Shorts: Why Short Sellers Are Always Blamed for Market Crashes and How History Is Repeating Itself, by Robert Sloan

Why Main Street blames financial speculation for economic crashes

Disdain for short selling is as American as apple pie, dating back to our nation’s founding. But as Bob Sloan argues in Don’t Blame the Shorts, short selling lies at the heart of every Wall Street transaction and fuels the financial system.

Sloan explains that without shorting, credit in high-yield, distressed, convertible bonds and equities vanishes, thus choking economic activity. This eye-opening look at short selling in America provides new insight into our hostile relationship with shorting—a relationship that turns out to be unhealthy and counterproductive.

Don't Blame the Shorts!
By Elizabeth C. Howorth
I have never been very interested in books about Wall Street, especially now. But "Don't Blame the Shorts" engaged me from the word "go." I left the book thinking that I've been very misled about the way that the government and the media portrays short-sellers. According to the author, they are not forces of evil, but rather, they at like market regulators. We all know that short-sellers do what they do in order to make money, but Mr. Sloan proves that they also play a crucial role in maintaining the honesty and integrity of financial institutions.

Since we are passing through an era when the real truth about companies seems so hard to disentangle, the author picked the right moment to point out that it is actually the short-sellers who are trying to make Wall Street more transparent.

It's worth noting, also, that even though this author is a trained financial professional, his book isn't too complicated for someone from a different profession. While I would have been interested to read about a few more examples of his point, I won't take issue with a book that is slim and lively.

Praise For Don't Blame The Shorts
By Henrik Brun
Any lover of the history of our nation and the struggle between politicians and Wall Street will find Robert Sloan's book a delight to read. This unique book should be on everyone's Top 10 books for understanding our complex financial system from inception until now, especially for the regulators of our markets. Unlike the dry policy-based books out there, Mr. Sloan's book weaves together history lessons from the Pecora Commission to Richard Whitney's Senate testimonies (someone who knew the liquidity benefits of short selling, but due to his character flaws lacked credibility) to show that short selling is neither the cause of bear markets (old fashioned selling of long positions is) nor is prohibiting it during bear markets the best method of maintaining an orderly market (it's ironic that politicians never seem to point a finger at short sellers in a rising market).

Upon presenting readers with an overwhelming amount of historical evidence about the benefits that short sellers provide, the flawed attempts to stabilize the equity markets during the financial crisis become very clear. For example, the ban on short selling during the financial crisis shut down the convertible bond market when corporations desperately needed capital thereby exacerbating the economic contraction that followed. We must ask ourselves how this can be a good policy and hope that the next time a crisis occurs at least bona fide hedgers can provide financing to American businesses.

We all know that short sellers are an easy target during times of market turmoil, but that's not a valid excuse for misdirected regulations. Why didn't the regulators enforce pre-existing rules on naked short selling prior to the crisis? Had we all read Mr. Sloan's book we would have had a better understanding that leverage was much more of a culprit of the bear market during the financial crisis just as it was in 1929-1932. For example, market participants may recall that during the financial crisis most of the major market swings occurred from 3-4 pm. These are the prime hours when ETFs such as SDS (Proshares Ultra Short S&P 500 Index) have to trade to deliver 2X or 3X the daily performance of the underlying index. Was it short selling that made the bear market worse or a period of deleveraging on a global scale? Read Mr. Sloan's book to find out!

A Needed Look at the History of Short Selling and Government Regulation
By LizLab
In light of the market events of the past few years - both the financial meltdown and the government response to it - Bob's Sloan's book comes at just the right time to both present an entertaining look at short selling during the past 400 years and clarify many of the public misperceptions about the practice. The book is a perfect mix of objective history and subjective commentary by someone who empirically and historically shows that short selling is far from a nefarious, back-room practice that many politicians and the media would have us believe it is. As he takes us through the history of shorting (and the on-again, off-again regulation that has been enacted for the past four centuries), Sloan makes a convincing and nuanced case that shorting is a socially beneficial practice that tempers "irrational exuberance," keeps management honest, and provides incentives for ALL types of information to enter the marketplace, not just positive information. In essence, short sellers are the private-sector market watchdogs who indirectly encourage transparency and disclosure and directly help investors minimize risk while adding liquidity to the market. Furthermore, he shows how, in a tenuous marriage of convenience with corporate executives, government has consistently pandered to populist urges to curb short sellers (and their First Amendment right to express an opinion), what he describes as "serving public opinion without serving the public." He also exposes the hypocrisy of bank executives who, when lobbying for short selling bans, bite the hands that feed them and their prime brokerage businesses (i.e. the short sellers that pay for their services).

With politicians and the media in a race to the bottom to oversimplify complex subjects in order to gain public approval or ratings, books like "Don't Blame the Shorts" are more valuable than ever to someone who wants to block out all the "noise" and gain a more comprehensive understanding of how the markets work, who the major players are, and the role of government in it all. Simply put, I would highly recommend this book for anyone - finance professionals, academics, students, anyone interested in finance or the stock market - hoping to make sense of the modern financial world and the events of the day. It's educational, highly original, and a much-needed addition to the literature on finance and investing.

Really good
By Daniil
I liked the book because it introduces many fascinating places with original design solutions around the world along with great text descriptions. I guess what would make this book perfect is adding more images of particular places especially those which sometimes took only 2 pages to describe the whole area visually.
